I'm not sure if I posted in the thread, but here's my problem ... originally, my computer was able to play video files with an audio format of AC-3 ACM codec. BUT for some reason ... my computer won't play those files anymore. Everytime I open a video file with the AC-3 ACM codec, an error message pops up. I've tried playing the files with various players, such as BS player and Windows Media. Could someone please help me with this? I don't want to reboot my computer cuz I have many files stored in my computer.

    Install the following:

    1.) AC3 ACM Decompressor
    2.) AC3 Filter

Make sure you reboot (turn off then turn back on) the computer after you install.

Also you might want to try the VLC media player which is considered one of the best (if not the best) media player programs.

It would also hope if you told us what the error was that you are getting (or still get after doing the above). In fact it is probably best to take a screen shot of it and post it here.

But try the above and see what happens.

Thanks so much! After installing the decrompressor and the filter, I was able to play the files.

I was having some audio issues playing a DVD that has AC3 sound using VLC. Do the AC3 compressor and filter need to be installed along with the VLC player, or does the VLC Player have AC3 audio codecs built in?

My understanding is that the VLC media player has codecs built-in but since AC-3 must be "licensed" from Dolby then maybe it lacks an AC-3 decoder. I dunno.

It can't hurt to install the AC3 ACM Decompressor and AC3 Filter so you might as well try and see what happens ...

I've only recently started to use the VLC Media Player and noticed that when it plays a DVD with AC3 audio, the sound is a little distorted. The same VOB files from the DVD play fine on a computer that has an AC3 codec installed. It could be the DVD-RW drive has a problem, but it's pretty new and haven't noticed any other drive issues.
