    Help please
on 2 networks, media player can't access video files on server. comes up with error message can't access. file maybe open, may not have permission to veiw or proxy settings are incorrect. use bearshare downloads haven't had any problems until recently when server was updated with nero 6, divx. xivd codecs and media player 10. files open fine on server and and have burnt sucessfully. All old video files open and play on the 2 networks. I have also tried transferring and saving files to a folder on network hard drive comes up with error message can't access file. Have downloaded the same codecs pack and media players. have also tried vlc, virtualdub neither will open file on network. also checked proxy settings, sharing, directx,
cache check, disk cleanup. i'm sure this is a file problem but don't know how to fix it, I have tried to rewrite to an asx file in notepad and saving to the same folder as the original file, this didn't work either. Please help I'm starting to tear my hair out

That sounds like your permissions have changed between your server and your other computers. I have deleted all the network drives from 'My Network Places' on my HTPC and then added them back it and managed to reset them between the HTPC and the server when I had that problem. You can also try turning off sharing on the server drives, then restoring it. There's probably an easier way, but this has only happened once.

I don't have any players, added codecs or otherwise on the server, just a OS. I use VLC and Zoom on the HTPC or the laptop for all playback. I share the server secondary drives, not the server boot drive.

But I'm not a networking expert. Others may have better information.

    And welcome to our forums.

To rule out the players, just try to browse to the folder/files(s) from the network pc's. I suspect redwudz is on the right track. Player or codec issues wouldn't give you an "access" error.
