I am just now getting into adding subtitles to movies but I have found an application called Miyu. It is a freeware application that generates the four most common types of subtitle files. I am experimenting with an application called MovieGate to create the DVD. It has a feature for importing the subtitle file.

I successfully created a subtitled clip yesterday using a QuickTime movie yesterday using Miyu alone and a Quicktime movie I had. I haven't tried much with MovieGate yet since I just needed a very short clip. MovieGate says it supports AVI though.

  3. Does this or any other subtitle application support generating subtitles for only specified chapters? I've ripped long some DVDs to XviD with Handbrake, but I've done the split into 2 700MB files by chapter. Thus, I need an application that would support creating subtitles in the same manner.

I haven't tried something like that yet. Miyu did let me apply a subtitle then skip ahead several minutes and apply a second subtitle. Here's what I think should work though I have not tried it and it may be time consuming:
    1. Open the .vob files using something like MPEG Streamclip, and extract the video.
    2. Save the video/export the video in a format that Miyu reads
    3. Import into Miyu and add subtitles as needed.

I think that this would work since they seem to be stored at points in the movie where the subtitles. I have only tried tow very short test files so I am by no means expert. I will be doing more this weekend and will let you know what I find out.

I am also going to look at a plug in for iMovie called SlickCaption. I am also looking at iMovie's built-in titling features, such as these to see if they work for my needs. I don't think any of these options support DivX without first converting to something else but I haven't read though all of the documentation.
