  1. Hi,

I just installed Windows XP Pro 64-bit. I have a lot of video programs and codec packages, etc, and I was wondering if they'll all work with the this os. I use AutoGK and DVD Decrypter a lot and need codec packs, mostly. And I also use AC3 Filter, AVI Joiner, Free DVD, ImToo, InCD, TmPGEnc, AviSynth, VirtualDub, DivX, Xvid, Codec Checker, and some video converters. I also use a lot of media players, mostly Media Player Classic and VLC.

If they can't be installed and work using x64, would you tell me what I have to do?

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

The process chain all needs to be the same so:
    32bit AVISynth, 32bit VDubMod & 32bit Xvid is ok
    64bit AVISynth, 64bit VDub & 64bit Xvid is ok.

You could for instance (in theory) have a 32bit version of AutoGK launch 64bit VDub with a 64bit AVISynth source and use 64bit Xvid for output.

Media Player Classic is 32bit only, so 32bit dshow decoders like AC3 Filter should work. VLC doesn't use decoders. Think it is also 32bit only, at least under windows.

Anyway, since you already installed it. Have a play around.

I found XP 64 a real pain for compatibility. I think Vista 32 was easier. I don't find it faster, or better than XP 32. It's not ready for 'Prime time', just my opinion, again. Sorry, don't mean to rant. But take a look here for one compatibility list:

  4. I don't find that it's any faster either and I installed it in a new computer, but I haven't tried to do any video work with it yet . . . that's what I'm hoping will be faster. It seems like Vista is going to be the standard . . . a bad choice on my part to have bought X64. I really only care about having X64 video programs, codecs, etc, so I can do my work on videos a lot faster (I hope). I don't mind anything else being X32 as long as it's compatible.

If you know of a way that I can remove Windows Media Player v10, I'd love to hear it. I can't do a rollback and "repair" to remove it because X64 came with the disk.

    Thanks for the link

One method to remove WMP10: http://ezinearticles.com/?Uninstall-Windows-Media-Player-10-and-Start-Enjoying-Your-Me...Again&id=56655

A method I have used for all versions: http://talkback.zdnet.com/5208-3513-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=887&messageID=79250&start=-1

I eliminated WMP from several of my computers. Don't want it, don't need it. JMO

BTW, either method may have consequences, though I haven't found any. Just a warning, though.

Not sure if x64 is supported by nlite, etc. Otherwise you can remove WMP, etc. from the install CD and install without it.

Encoding using 32bit apps won't be any faster under x64. It needs to be 64bit and even then it could end up slower due to asm being replaced with straigh c routines. If properly ported you could be looking at upto a 20% speed improvement on the same hardware.

    AutoGK: 32bit
    DVD Decrypter: 32bit
    codec packs: 32bit
    AC3 Filter: 32bit
AVI Joiner, Free DVD, ImToo: probably all 32bit
InCD: all Nero apps I think are still 32bit
    TmPGEnc: 32bit
AviSynth: 64bit but some functions are slower or missing.
VirtualDub: newer versions are 64bit, VDubMod isn't though.
DivX: 32bit only still I think.
    Xvid: 64bit
some video converters: probably all 32bit.

  7. I've been Googling a lot of the programs and codecs that I want and they're not out in 64-bit. I don't notice anything else being faster with the 64-bit. It's a Biostar TForce 6100-939 MicroATX mainboard with an AMD Athlon 64 ClawHammer CPU, 2G RAM. It's a little faster because it's a new pc and hasn't gotten bogged down with sludge yet, but my old pc was over 4 years old and could run 3 programs at about the same speed as this one. I'm beginning to think that X64 was all hype. I usually only rip DVDs and save them to ext hdds. It used to take about 10 to 12 hours with my old pc so I'm itching to see how long it'll take with this one.

  8. I can't use this system because it's a new build and when I installed Windows, WMP 10 came with it. I used it on my old pc though.

I didn't mind WMP 9 because I could edit mp3 information easily and that's about all I used it for. I mainly use either VLC or Media Player Classic. I thought that I was going to have great graphics with it too because the TForce 6100-939 boasted that it delivers great graphics . . . but I haven't seen that yet. I'm still installing a lot of programs and other things so maybe I'll see it later, but I'm not holding my breath. So far, I'm really disappointed with its performance and I don't know if the blame belongs to the hardware or software.

    I tried nlite but it's doesn't work with X64.

  10. Does anyone know if I can uninstall X64 and sell it to someone? I registered the product key already. I'm thinking that I'd rather have Vista 32-bit than XP Pro 64-bit.

You would need to check the EULA. I don't know myself, but I could imagine all sorts of activation fun and phone calls to Microsoft for the person that buys it !
    If in doubt, Google it.

  12. Hi, thanks for the info. It looks like I'm stuck with incompatibility issues until the rest of the tech world catches up, if they decide to do so.

    I really don't get it.

AMD have been selling 64bit CPU's for how long now? On the Intel front, you have newer P4's and all core2's. Can't be that many powerful systems left that aren't 64bit. That's a lot of potential left unrealised.

I'm sure MS wouldn't want you reselling it. Doesn't mean that you can't though. http://clevescene.com/2005-03-30/news/kill-bill/

I too am fighting x64 compatibility. I haven't figured out what works best for conversion, but I did find that final codecs (torrent) works for all codecs in x64 including HD and Blu ray.
I'm not elitist; I'm better than that.

  16. Well, a lot has changed since I first posted this topic in February 2007. Since then, I've found:

    - K-Lite Codec Pack Full 4.0.4 Beta 4.0.0 1.3.1 (x64)
    - VirtualDub v1.8.3 for x64
    - DVDx X64

Every video program now works with no problems. I've also become used to XP Pro x64 and I can honestly say that I no longer see a difference between using x32 and x64, except on very few occasions when I receive a message that tell me that the software wasn't made for my type of machine. When that happens, I find a similar program that will work with x64, and I haven't had a problem finding them.

I purchased Vista x64 and installed it a few months ago because it seems that Microsoft and hardware and software companies are putting all of their energy into Vista but my hardware wasn't compatible with Vista x64. It was very hard to get my pc to accept XP Pro x64 again. It took 3 tries to get it to format properly and, to tell you the truth, I didn't like Vista x64. It was made for kindergardeners. I'll just keep updating XP Pro x64 for as long as Microsoft makes updates for it.
