I don't know what happened but in my network settings I now see an internet gateway denoted. (see first image below).

Right clicking on the gateway and drilling into the settings it seems as though a 'wan' was set up on my machine without my knowledge. (second image below) If I try to disable the gateway and re-establish connection via my local area connection (as it had worked before) I get no network.

What supposed do you think caused this? Do I have to be concerned at all about security? How do you get rid of the gateway so I can have the net card obtain ip via router as it worked (and always worked) in the past?

Looking at the service that is running supporting this gateway (dpnsvr) it seems it is part of Microsquashes DirectPlay feature.... hmmm, how to remove OR maybe don't worry about it since I'm behind a hard/soft firewall.

    Thanks in advance.

It might be naughty. Wouldn't hurt to check.

Thanks .... I'm still digging into it. Lots of pages associated with dpnsvr ... but not associating it with a gateway

This post and thread also provided a resolution for me. The gateway was flipped on via some proggie.
