  1. I have a region 2 DVD that I copied to my hard drive using the latest DVDFab Decrypter. I then burnt the files to a DVD using Nero 7. When I try to play the DVD in my Sony RDR GX330 it says that it cannot play the DVD. However, if I put the DVD in my Lite-on LVW-1100 it plays fine. If I repeat the process using a region 1 DVD the resulting copy plays fine on the Sony and the Lite-on. I thought that DVDFab Decrypter removed the region code, i.e set it to all regions? Is there something else that the Sony is detecting that tells it the origional was a region 2 disc and therefore not to play it?

Guessing you are from the US, and the region 2 is a UK release, not a Japanese one.

Your Sony is resolutely NTSC. The Liteon plays PAL and either converts it to NSTC, or your TV accepts PAL. Also, Sony have very poor error messages when complaining about format, often leading to confusion with region codes. Region codes are not your problem.

There is not nice way to do it other than either ditch the Sony (my preference) or convert the video. If you are going down the conversion path, I would strongly suggest you follow this guide : https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=300144 however you should read it all the way the through as it has gone through some refinement over time.

  3. Yes, I'm from the US using a standard NTSC TV, and the DVD is one that I bought in the UK - Decrypter says that it is Region 2 & 4. I guess my understanding of how these DVDs store their data is flawed? I always thought that the movie information was stored digitally in all discs the same (i.e. would be coded for PAL, NTSC etc.) and that the player did the conversion to output analog PAL, NTSC etc. I thought that the Region code was just a gimmick that the producers use to limit sales - primarily cheap USA DVDs being bought in the UK.

  4. NTSC and PAL digital video are different formats. There are plenty of DVD players out there that will play both formats. PAL discs are converted on the fly to NTSC (if that is the type of TV the player is hooked up to).

Region codes is a gimmic yes. Different TV systems is completely unrelated to region coding, but a fact, that there are different TV standards in different areas of the earth (and possibly elsewhere). Some DVDs are for NTSC, some are for PAL. They can all have any or no region code.
