Creating Dvd start menu problem

My dvd's work fine after burning them however, the menu that I create only flashes on the screen for about a half a second, and then the screen goes white and you can kind of tell that the start button is there, after I press play on my remote it plays the dvd fine. It's not like I'm creating some complex menu either, I've just made a screen shot that I like for the background image, then make a "start" button, choose the silent sound for the sound option and add the menu to the job... can anyone tell me what is wrong, or what I'm doing wrong?
What I'm using...to convert, avi2dvd with HCEnc for the encoding, using nero to burn the video_ts files...playing it back on my dvd player, which is a JVC proscan, or my magnavox proscan, does the same thing on both and my powerdvd program on my computer... flashes the menu screen for a split second..then goes blank
any suggestions?
