  1. Hi i have no problems with converting to and from avi until now. I have recently bought a new denon dvd player and have a problem. I have some HD avi files(xvid and divx) that are 4gig each and very good quality but the problem i have as they are way to big on the hieght and width pixel, for example one file is 1280 width and 720 hieght as it is an hd xvid file( will play fine on pc but not in dvd player). My player has a max of 720 x 480 for 30fps and 720 x 576 for 25fps. All i want to do is down scale the pixels to the max my dvd player will take and keep the best quality in the file possible by keeping the video at no less than 1500kbps. I have searched this sight for the last 2 hours and i cant find anything on changing this but still keeping the file an avi. There is loads if i wish to go to a dvd, mpg etc etc but no avi to avi that i can find.

    Any help would be really really apreciated

    Thanks Jon

  2. Try VirtualDub. There are lots of guides covering its use. Basically:

    File -> Open Video File
    Video -> Filters -> Add -> Resize (set size you want)
    Video -> Compression -> Xvid/Divx -> Configure (set parameters you want)
    file -> Save as AVI

    FitCD to create a small avisynth script to correctly resize your video. Load this into virtualdub and you can use fast recompress.

    You wanted to encode at 720x576 with a PAR of 64:45? Have you checked that your player supports ARS (Aspect Ratio Signalling)?

  5. Thanks for the info, i am now converting a file with virtual dub at the mo so hopefully that will work.

    Not sure about the player supporting ARS, not even sure how it will effect the player to be honest. Cant find anything in the book about it(denon 1730). All i know is it has no problems playing any of my standard AVI files. I just got hold of a few hd avi files as i hoped these would play fine as the quality that comes out of the dvd onto my new TV when i set it to upscale the picture to 1080i is awesome concidering it is not a hd player. But as i found out it wont play them so i hoped it would be down to the fact that the book states for divx a maximum of 720 x 576 @ 25fps and recommended constant bitrate of between 500 and 1500kbps. Not the 1280 x 720 that this file is at.

    Thanks Jon
