Please forgive me but I couldn't find my particular answer anywhere
on this forum for the last week I've been lurking around & have tried
all the suggestions I could find before posting this.... such as making
sure all other programs are turned off including virus software &
screensavers, got latest updates & drivers etc.....
I have an Intel duo core 1.86 processor with 2 gigs of Ram
150gig HD & an 80gig HD to capture to...
Capturing via Firewire through a pinnacle capture card...
I have a Sony HC3 HDV camera & cannot capture anything
in HD through Vegas Movie Studio 7 Platinum... It will not recognize
the camera.... I also have Pinnacle 10 (which was very bad in my
opinion) and couldn't capture HD with that either... I uninstalled Pinnacle
thinking there might be a conflict... Maybe a conflict with the pinnacle
capture card??? At first I could capture HDV but there was no preview
& it dropped more frames than it captured... I updated the pinnacle
software & then couldn't capture, that's when I uninstalled pinnacle 10...
Also when the windows window pops up to ask what to do when I turn
my camera on there is nothing in the list???
I can, on the other hand capture in Vegas when downconverting to DV
through the Camera.... It recognizes it right away...
Not sure what to do on this... any help or a point in the right direction
will help....

I don't have Vegas Movie Studio 7 Platinum but it is supposed to download HDV over IEEE-1394. Have you tried Sony support?

I'm having a similar problem with my Sony HDR HC1. I ruled out the camera today and am doing a complete reistall using Ppro technotes from Adobe. It's been a very perplexing problem as the hardware and software are all comparable etc. Did you solve your problem?

HDV requires specific support using a standard IEEE-1394 port and HDV capture software.

Capturing HDV or DV from Sony's HDV Camcorder/Deck
Capturing HDV video into Vegas 6.0 (or later) or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0 (or later) from Sony's HDV Camcorder/Deck:
Connect the Sony HDV camcorder or deck to your computer's IEEE-1394 port using the IEEE-1394 (I-Link) cable.
Turn on your camcorder and switch it to Play/Edit mode and make sure that your Sony HDV camcorder is switched to HDV modefor capturing High Definition Video.
To find out if the Sony HDV camcorder is set to HDV mode, flip open the LCD screen and see if HDVout I-Link is on the LCD screen. If you see DVout I-Link, press P-MENU at the lower-right of the LCD screen. In the menu, press MENU --> STANDARD SET --> VCR HDV/DV and press HDV:
Make sure that the "VCR HDV/DV" setting is set to "HDV"

To capture HDV in Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0 (or later), you need to use the new internal capture utility as opposed to the external Video Capture program. When you go to File-->Capture Video, it will ask you which of the two capture utilities you would like to use. Note that if you are using the original release of Vegas 6.0, go to Options-->Preferences-->Video, uncheck the box that says "Use external video capture application", and click Ok.
Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0 (or later) should automatically detect your Sony HDV camcorder or deck. If your device is not recognized, please see KB 1332 HDV camcorder or deck not recognized?
Note: When capturing HDV, Batch Capture is not supported.
Go into the Prefs menu in the Internal Capture window, select Device and the IEEE 1394/MPEG2-TS Device option, or click on the Device tab and the IEEE 1394/MPEG2-TS option.
You may also want to click on the Disk Management tab to adjust your capture location. The default path will be listed in this window. To change the path, highlight the existing path and click on the red X icon right above the window. Then click on Add Folder and navigate to the place you would like to capture, add a folder there and name it. Then make sure that only that path has a check next to it in the Disk Management window. If more that one path is checked there, it will capture to the first path until that is full, then start capturing to the second path, etc.
When you are through adjusting your settings in the Prefs area, click on the Apply and OK button.
Then rewind the tape to where you would like to start the capture from, using the double arrow Rewind icon at the bottom of the Capture window or use your Camera/Deck controls. Click on the Circle icon at the bottom of the Capture window to Start Capture.
Capturing DV video from an HDV device into Vegas 6.0 (or later) or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0 (or later):
The Sony HDV camcorder has a built-in function that lets you downsample HDV video to DV. To downsample the HDV video to DV, flip open the LCD panel and press P-MENU. In the menu, press MENU --> STANDARD SET --> I.LINK CONV --> ON HDV-->DV.
To capture DV video from your HDV Camcorder/Deck in Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0 (or later), you need to use the External capture utility as opposed to the Internal Video Capture program referenced above. When you go to File-->Capture Video, it will ask you which of the two capture utilities you would like to use. Note that you may need to go to Options-->Preferences-->Video, and check the box that says "Use external video capture application", and click Ok. The External video capture application should automatically recognize the device if you have the Downsample option enabled on the device.

Thanks. I've pretty much been there done that with all the settings etc. I have an OHCI compliant capture card iEEE 1394 and all compatible hardware with tons of speed. Is there a specific capture card that is recommended for HDV capture. I'm going to start randomly replacing hardware soon.

ADS PYRO1394 PCI Express or 64 bit PCI

though in most cases an ADS PYRO 1394DV card will work just fine -- HDV is still the same data rate as DV after all ...
I would not trust anything pinnacle , even AVID (which owns them) says to use a ADS card - so does Apple for Final Cut (for DV that is)
Other cards WILL work though"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Thanks. and Descartes was right on as well as a drunken fart

I use a Sony HC1 and have no problem capturing hd video in Vegas 7. I have had instances where my camera was not recognized, but as someone previously suggested, it was because I was trying to capture HD video, and I had the camera set to export DV. Once I corrected that, it worked fine. Another thing is, make sure when prompted prior to capturing, that you tell vegas what type of video you are working with.. Vegas 7 asks if you are importing HDV or DV. Hope that maybe helps you out some.

Thanks. I seem to have some kind of system problem which is stressing out my meat and potato computer guys. I'll have it all back up next week and we'll see if it works. Meanwhile I'm studying interlacing and the proper render and export settings for different projects. What is your final output? I'm eventually going to HD D5 as it is what the film festivals I want to enter seen to want.

Also it makes a difference in which PCI slot you install your firewire card in......At least it does with the ads cards
Make sure its in the primary and not the secondary PCI slot -
