Changing Compression Format in AVI files

Hi there, I have a problem. I have downloaded some AVI files off the internet and burned them on CDs to play in my DVD Player on my TV... Some files worked, others didn't... i figured that the Compression Format used was different than what my DVD player supports...

I noticed how on some files there was a simple DivX Compression Format and some others had DixV 3 Low Compression Format... the latter weren't working on my DVD Player, so i figured that if i could change the Compression Format on my AVI files they would then work... the problem is that I do not know how to change that... I've searched the internet but there's no hints on that... can somebody here help me maybe?
