Panasonic, any of the newer ones.

Why do you want it? Panasonic is one of the more mediocre quality machines. JVC, Toshiba, LiteOn and Pioneer are usually better choices.

I actually have a Pioneer right now.. it produces good image quality but for whatever reason when I watch the DVDs it creates on a computer the video will occasionally pause just for a split second (like the video is trying to catch up with the audio). This happens quite often and is annoying.

I noticed that it doesn't happen when using Cyberlink's MPEG-2 decoder, but the built-in one in Media Player Classic (based on libmpeg2) is the one I like to use and is the one that is affected.

I have seen many DVDs with this particular background and have always been impressed with the quality.. just an observation.. what does the typical JVC menu look like maybe I have seen it as well..?

  4. I have a current ( borrowed unit ) and previous generation Panasonic and that is not a menu I have ever seen. This is the Panasonic menu from a DMR-ES35V which is current.

How sure are you that a recorder and not a software program produced that menu?

I know that is a Panasonic menu, I've seen it more times than I can count. It's one of the optional ones that can be used instead of the butt-ugly MS-DOS styled one that is default. I know the EH80 and EH85 have those in use. I thought it was on my ES10 too, but maybe not.

Here's a JVC menu (same on JVC DR-M10 and JVC DR-M100):

(yes, never set the clock, didn't label anything either)

If you want a quality stand alone DVD recorder then that boils down to one of two choices: The Pioneer DVR-640H-s or the Toshiba RD-XS35.

Those are the two best models currently available. I say "best" in terms of not only image quality but also features and capabilities etc.

I will take your word for it never having tested a Panasonic hdd model. I do not believe the regular models have selectable menus.

The author of this thread did not say if money is an issue. These do take a bigger slice out of the budget.
