VCD compatibility DOES NOT equal CD-R/W compatibility.
All VCD compatibility means is that your DVD player has the firmware to playback a VCD if it can read it.
Many DVD players do not have a drive that is designed to read CD-R or CD-RW media and not surprisingly, do so poorly.
Have a look at your users manual. Does it say anywhere that it can play CD-R or CD-RW media explicitly? If not, then it wasn't designed to do so. Those player that do will usually mention something about dual-laser or dual-optics.
Usually, you can still get recordable CD media to work in these players, but you will have to experiment with different brands to find one that works. CD-RW often work better in these cases.
