i have read the sticky at the top about burning dvds with mactheripper and toast 6. i think i understand the process, but when i gave it a shot - it wouldnt play on my dvd player or the apple dvd player. so i have a few simple questions.

i extract the movie with mtr and then thats it. i dont compress it. i either use single layer dvd-r for main feature discs that fit, or i also have dvd+r dl for exact copies of dvds that are over 5 gigs ( i would like to make all my movies on these discs when i finally get the hang of doing it). right now im just using a main feature ~ 3 gigs on dvd-r for testing.

with mtr, when i extract the movie, i get the file with the dvd name on it just like when the dvd mounts. so i didnt have to make an all new file with the dvd name since i already had it. i added in the audio_ts file. what is confusing to me is why does dragging the video_ts file onto the apple dvd player work, but then dragging the whole file (named whatever the dvd is when it mounts) doesnt work?

now with toast 6 lite. i dragged the entire file into it, deleted the ds_store file, but lite doesnt have the dvd-rom udf button... is this my problem? does this mean i cant use this software to burn dvds?

    thanks for the help.

Toast 6 Lite does not have the option to format a UDF disc which is required for video DVD. There is a free application called DVD Imager that can make a UDF format disc image that you can burn to DVD using either Toast's Copy window or Disk Utility.

DVD Imager can be downloaded here:

    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/DVD_Imager_1.5.dmg

It works in Jag, Panther and Tiger.

Burn-OSX will also make a udf compliant dvd. http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net

thank you very much for your quick replies. i downloaded Burn and followed the directions again. i used Data then DVD (UDF). im using good media by sony though i dont have a program that allows me to get the actual media code. the disc is 16x speed and my burner is capable of 18x but i burned it at 16x. my dvd still didnt work in my apple dvd player or my ps2. both said they were unsupported media or something like that. at this point im not really sure what else to do.i know that the extracted file isnt corrupted because it works on the apple dvd player when i open the video_ts file. the whole file comprising the video_ts file and the audio_ts file DOES NOT open with apple dvd player though. is this the origin of my problem? should i try a different movie, extract the whole thing and go through the process again? hopefully ill get it right before i run out of my 10 dvd-r's, ive wasted two so far. but i bought them for this exact purpose so im not disappointed really.

for experimental purposes, i burned only the ts_video folder because that was the folder that has played on the apple dvd player to begin with. and now the dvd works on my computer as well as my ps2... go figure. seems like the audio_ts folder has been keeping it from working.

Glad you were able to get it working -- congrats!

FYI, you don't need a special utility to read the media codes -- just open a terminal window and type "drutil status" (without quotes). Although there are utilities out there that give you lots more information, this will give you the basics.
