    Hi everybody,

I have an LG DVB418 (Faroudja chipset) upconverting DVD player with new firmware update and remote hacks done for upconverting over component cables. When upconverting to either 720p or 1080i, I am getting horrible black artifacting showing up, especially noticeable during the credits of movies with a near-black background. For example, when white wording appears on the background, there is a darker-than-the-background box left around the where the wording was once it disappears, along with other blacker streaks around the screen. I realize that HDMI would likely be better for this DVD player as it is has better black response. Does this seem like a problem with the DAC that could be remedied by switching to HDMI, or is it just a common Faroudja issue when upconverting? I just don't want to drop some cash on an HDMI cable if it likely won't help the solution.

    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, it could go either way. There are cases where switching to HDMI corrects the issue. However, this seems to be a "common" complaint with the chipset. The issue seems to vary by TV/display type and output type (component/HDMI).

I have the Oppo 971H connected to a rear projection CRT using HDMI, and I don't have any issues.
