i have a dvd, i want the files on my computer with a smaller size

as you can tell, i'm a complete noob. I have no knowledge of the lingo being used either, so please bear with me.

1) i have a dvd
2) i want a copy of that dvd on my computer. I tried using some software, and i guess i succeeded, but the files are huge. When you check out other avi files online in torrent sites usually, they often have dvd ripped movies at only 700 mb without a noticeable diminishment in quality. How do you go about doing that?
