    a) you're using Vista. Not too many here are yet AFAIK.

    b) You're using a codec pack

    c) your post is exceptionally vague.

No wonder you're not getting any help !
    If in doubt, Google it.

"It skips or jumps" ? Post an example clip somewhere. Just 10 seconds or so.

I just bought a brand new car, put sugar in the gas tank, and now the engine skips and backfires. What is wrong ?

    a) You installed a codec pack. Might as well take a leak in the case while you are at it.

    b) A minute or two at the homepage for Tmpgenc Xpress would tell you that they have not yet even acknowledged Vista's existence yet. The only two OS's currently supported are XP and Win2k, and only XP is recommended.

I am also willing to bet your source is not exactly pristine either.

I suspect that all your problems currently stem from impatience. Too impatient to find out what codecs you need, so install as many as possible and damn the consequences. Too impatient to wait and upgrade when more software is supported, because surely everything will run, right ?

At this point I would try to uninstall the codec pack (good luck with that, really), then try running tmpgenc xpress in compatibility mode to see if it smooths things out.

guns1inger thanks for the help, no need to be such a Pr1ck about it my PC came with Vista on it when i brought it 2 weeks about it, i take it your just one of these people who waits for someone who words something wrong or does something wrong to start showing how big and great they are.

Anyway like i said thanks for the help i will try to sort it out, it seems to work 90% of the time i will have to tweak.

What is the best way to install codecs, is it to download individual codecs from the creator such as divX and Xvid im stuck with the mpeg codecs?

Some codec packs may work, but the vast majority cause problems, and in the worst case can cause permanent damages that require a system reinstall. Not something you want to do.

If you need a MPEG-2 codec for playback you can install a software player like PowerDVD or similar. It also installs the codec, even if you uninstall the program later. Or you can try Stinkys MPEG2 Codec. With other codecs, use a program like Gspot 2.60 and it will tell you what you need. Then install only that codec.

If you are converting the average Xvid off the net, try ConvertXToDVD. It's easier than TMPGEnc for that type of conversion. Here's a Vista compatibility list, that may help you find usable programs: http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List

kraziekris, you also need to wait a day or two before bumping your topic. As mentioned not many of use or are familiar with Vista and most of us just visit this forum, not spend all our time here.

Lastly, don't get started off here 'on the wrong foot'. We are here to help, but it's not required.

    And welcome to our forums.
