I presently use Acronis True Image, and I wonder is there anything else better, meaning less bulky but also dependable. Ive restored a few files before with Acronis, but I think its bulky. Generally Id like something that will enable me to save a full backup of my system files and applications, and enable me to restore files and/or folders when neccessary. Thanks

I use to make backups with a product called Retrospect, now called insignia:

    http://www.emcinsignia.com/products/homeandoffice/retroforwindows/

I don't know if the quality of the product is still good though.

I use Acronis to clone backups of the boot drives of my computers, but I'm not a fan of it's file/data backup system.
Since I had Nero already, I tried the BackItUp program for backing up data to external hard drives. It's worked pretty well and I didn't have to buy anything. It does incremental backups, pretty easy to figure out.
Backing up data is never a picnic, but you have to do it.

I use the same tool. It will also create an emergency boot disk with
xp lite install and then restores from latest backup -- saved my butt more
    than once.

For data; brute force method. Any OS.
Install a secondary hard drive. Keep all your important files in a single directory on the primary drive. Copy directory to secondary drive for a brute-force backup.

For data; elegant incremental method. Windows:

For boot / OS files. Windows:
Have two (smallish) partitions on two different physical drives. Use http://www.xxclone.com to "clone" the boot OS from one partition to the other. Make sure to make the target bootable the first time you run XXCLONE.

Change the boot priority in BIOS to boot from last-good partition and then "restore" by running XXCLONE "in reverse".
