This is a freshly install XP with almost nothing on it. Latest Video Drives and Audio Drivers. Also tried an older video driver.

I can play any sort of video through VLC but if its a DVD either on a DVD, DVD files on the hard drive, or an ISO file with DVD files in it when I CLOSE or STOP VLC it causes my system process to spike out to 50% (dual core system, means it taking 100% usages of the primary core)

Other DVD player softwares work just fine.

Anyone ran into this before? its driving me nuts!

Increase the verbosity level (either in the preferences or with a -vvvv command line option) and look at the debug messages (in the terminal or in the Messages window)

Yeah did that. Nothing sticks out other then a few dropped frames while playing.

Dang.... Would be interesting to see which file it hangs on.

I just ran it along with filemon from sysinternals.com, and the last thing it writes to after the app closes is C:\Documents and Settings\your user name here\Application Data\vlc\cache

Perhaps you can rename the files in there temporarily? Maybe one or more is corrupt.

Another thing - VLC needs to be uninstalled completely before installing a newer version. It'll keep remnants of old versions otherwise. Give it a shot, and go into the VideoLan folder after you deinstall to remove anything left. Same with that folder I posted above. Hope you get it working. That version 0.8.6a is really nice and detailed looking on Mpeg files.

This was solved btw. Turns out a few others started having the issue and its related to the AC'97 driver. Basically the new version if poopy and once it was forced back to the 8/13/2006 driver everything is fine again.
