I use Audacity on occasion, and have a couple of questions. I think I have a trial version. I see a counter somewhere that says I have xx hours of use left. I guess that means at some point, I will need to send some bucks to someone. Who? Is there a better description of the program than found with the download? When I try to grab video from winamp, I seem to end up with a much lower volume than winamp (and maybe WMP) produces. Any idea why that happens? It may happen when I finally xfer the output to a mp3 or other file format. Each time I start a recording over, I get new tracks pairs. So if I miscue, 3 times, the fourth set of track pairs is finally the good one. Is there a way to prevent new track pairs from appearing?

That counter refers to how much more audio your hard drive is capable of storing. Audacity is open source & free. There isn't a trial version as it's not for sale. Good news, eh?

Hopefully someone else can help you with the other thing.

Thanks. Yes, good news, but that might mean the doc I see is all I get. It's pretty minimal.

There is quite a bit of documentation on their site: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/ There is also a new beta version of their software I am trying out.

I don't know a lot about the program myself, I use it mostly for the filtering and to make dual channel audio from a single channel source. The newer version has added more filters.

If you like their program, drop them an email. They always appreciate feedback and complements. I like to encourage freeware authors whenever possible.

Taking a look at the tutorials. I'm using 1.2.4. What's the version of the latest?* In 1.2, I don't see the use of the word filter. Perhaps it's in the later version. One thing I'd like to do is take a file that has too much bass and some low volume scratchiness in it, and boost the treble and eliminate the scratchiness.

    * Ah, it looks like a Beta version, 1.3.2. Not quite ready for prime time.
