  1. Hi guys, I have an mpg film of which I only require a specific sequence from, what is the best freeware tool for doing the splitting?

Basically, I want to take this section of mpg and burn it to disk without having to encode the section of the film again?

    Thanks

Best, cuttermaran. But you must demux the video and audio first.

If you think demuxing is too much work buy VideoRedo.

Cheers Baldrick, demuxing isnt a hassle, I just didnt need the time consuming encoding headache

If I have to demux the video/audio before splitting, how much of a pain is it to avoid much in the way of sync problems with Cutterman?

  4. Actually - and sorry for being a bit dim here - but couldnt I just use the merge/cut mpg tools facility in Tmpgenc?

Yep, you can first try it first...but it's not free for mpeg2 video and it's very buggy.

Mpg2cut2 is pretty darned good, plus it has merge abilities.

While TMPGEnc does cost (after trial period) for MPEG2 encoding use, IIRC the cut/merge tool is still fully functional (along with MPEG1 encoding). And I neve had any difficulty with it at all for simple cuts (although I almost always would have been cutting on closed-GOP boundaries).

I just tried cut with tmpgenc 2.524 and it says the mpeg2 has expired.

    Wow.

Well, I've had the Plus (registered) version of TMPGEnc for quite a while now, so I guess I could be wrong. I am sure about the MPEG1 though, maybe it's just any MPEG2.

Even so, I'd still give my vote to Cuttermaran for these kinds of jobs. There are other muxer/demuxer utilities out there...
