    Hi,
I just joined today so if I make any mistakes regarding the forum rules, please forgive me, also I don't think this question should be in the newbie forum but since I'm only allowed postings here for the first day, well..... .
I encode my movies to xvid using GordianKnot RipPack 0.35.0 with GordianKnot Codec Pack 1.9. I consult Gorgianknot Illustrated Guide by dap & JS and doom9's xvid guide for help.
I have been to a lot of different video editing forums, the best and most helpful being videohelp and doom9, there isn't a section anywhere for individual movie settings eg. someone encoding a perfect copy(700-1400 MB of a certain movie and posting the codec parameters in the section as a guideline for others encoding the same movie. 'Cause even though I use excellent guides, the results often vary a lot from movie to movie(often using +-1400MB final size) as is the nature of the encoding process. The mods could set the rule that postings should only refer to a particular filesize eg. between 700-1400 MB etc. , anyway, just a newbie rant, I'd just had it on my mind for a while now.

My main question is that if someone has been able to make a good XVID encode of The Corpse Bride around 1400MB, would they kindly share the codec/software settings they used. Also, any help with encoding "A History of Violence" would also be greatly appreciated.

One more thing, is it safe to use koepi's XviD-1.1.2-01112006 with GordianKnotRipPack 0.35.0. I've tried but GK won't give me the codec options when I press the 1pass or 2ndpass buttons in the options tab or the final window after I save the avs file.

    Thank you

Can't really think of any major changes interface between 1.0.3 and 1.1.2. Some profile names were changed somewhere along the way, a seperate value was added for playback AR and threads were enabled for 1.2. That is about it.

Most people probably don't remember or don't know the settings they used. My method is to cut out a representative clip of the video about 5-10 minutes long and try a few different encoder settings to see what works best. At 1400MB, you should have good quality anyway. When you encode to a 700MB file, the encoder settings get a lot more critical.

Starting with a high quality source is very important. I have seen some 700MB Xvids that are very good, probably from a good DVD rip.

I use Virtual Dub often for Xvids, as I feel I have better control. But GK does a very good conversion.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks a lot, feels nice to be welcomed like this, I look forward to keep learning from the forum and possibly provide some input too in the future. You folks have already helped me a lot in improving the quality of my encodes.
    Thank you
