    my laptop has a toshiba SD-R6112 dvd-rw drive which reads software and original dvd's ok but dont seen to read backed up dvd's and dvd's from abroad.

    anyway to get round this?

    If you open windows explorer or my computer with the disc in the drive, can you see the contents?

    no, its like nothing is inserted. when I click it it says please insert insert a disk

    That's a tough one. My first thought was the region code. But if you insert a disc from the wrong region, the disc should be readable, however, when you try to play it you will get a "incorrect region" message or something similar.

    Also, from the specs it appears to only support -R discs, so if your "backed up" discs aren't -R, that could be the problem.
