  1. Can someone please tell me how to save the audio only from a WMV file, or to convert it to a MPG file.

    Thank you

    (Assuming NO DRM...)

    #1 (WMV-->WMA)
    Use Windows Media Encoder Utilities, Stream Editor. It can "demux" and remux to audio only WMV/ASF (aka WMA).

    #2 (WMV-->MPG)
    Use Windows MovieMaker. Load file, add to timeline. Save/Export Movie as DV-AVI (type1).
    Open in Virtualdub, save WAV. (If using v of Vdub that doesn't support type1, convert type1-->type2 with DVDate)

    #3. Download and install, Virtualdub MPEG2. The new version handles Windows Media.

    Open WMV file in Virtualdub MPEG2 and save wave or choose Video - Direct Stream Copy and Audio - Full Processing Mode - Compression - Compression of choice ( MP3 ) - File - Save As.

    Open new file in VirtualdubMod and choose Streams - Stream List - Demux and save MP3 file.

    I didn't list all the steps because I've written the same thing here a couple of times before, and it's easy enough to find those threads on this site...

    When I tried to open the new file in VirtualDubMod I got an error messaga that says

    Couldn't locate decompressor for for format DVSD (unknown)
    VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows compatible codec to decompress video...

    You can open a WMV file in SoundForge, detach video, resample or edit if needed and save audio track as wav to a different file. Then you can encode it to what you want.
    Alternatively you can open the video in AviSynth as DirectShowSource, save the opening script, open it in Vdub and save wav (or apply compression for audio before saving).
    One more way is to use EO Video (wave project mode).

    Not sure why you got that error unless you converted the WMV to DV-AVI. That error usually means that you need a DV decompressor like the Panasonic DV codec.

    When I wrote #3, I wasn't stating another step in the DV process but another option to get the audio out of a WMV.

    Alex_ander's suggestion of using an audio editor is a good option also. Goldwave will open the WM9.avi that I created by direct stream copying with Virtualdub MPEG2. I don't have a WMV to test.

    If you need a VFW DV codec, I prefer Cedocida.
    Both Type1 and Type2 DV files (with fourcc of DVSD) are working fine in my copy of Virtualdub (v 1.6.16). Note that this is NOT VirtualdubMod or VirtualdubMPEG2. Use those, when needed, for other processes/steps.
