I've added this paragraph to this first post in the thread because it has turned out that much, if not all the trouble has been caused by a program called 'Zoom Player', and its installation of a folder called 'ffdshow' in Program Files. Removal of 'Zoom Player' and of that folder with its contents, along with the usual registry cleanup afterwards, restored my other media programs to working order. (Uninstalling 'Zoom Player' did not at first remove 'ffdshow', which it had installed). I'm leaving all the detailed stuff about 'Super Converter' because of the way it puts all kinds of files into WINTT and WINNT\system32 that it really shouldn't, even if it asked, and that it should allow to be removed upon uninstallation. The lists of exactly what Super puts and where it puts it took a while to compile - so I'm hoping it will help others, and maybe even lead to a 'cleaner' version of what is otherwise a very good application. - Mr Person, UK
    ************************************************** *******

    Here's the original first post:

Since I installed the otherwise excellent 'Super Converter 2007' (erightsoft) I found that ArcSoft's 'VideoImpression2' started misbehaving..

For example, the animated preview would no longer work, and exporting a movie as AVI results in a clip that is inverted - that is, reflected upside down.

Re-installing VideoImpression had no effect, nor did uninstalling Super 2007.

Before you ask - no, I didn't have any 'cygwin' or 'cygz' dlls before Super 2007.

I think Super has overwritten/messed up some dll files - or done something to ActiveX or both..

Does anyone know how to restore the 'normal' files? Or even which files are modified by Super 2007, so that I can go and look for replacements? And where's the best place to get them?

Sorry to go on so long - hope someone can help..

    Mr Person, UK

I can sympathize with you, since when I had Super 2007 installed, it wouldn't convert any videos I put in it, but after adjusting the settings i managed to get it working again.

In this case, however, I may not know how to help you with this one, so I'm just putting this in to bump up the thread for someone who can help you.

    Thanks, Kerrex..

I've not had problems with Super itself, (the trick is to remember the 'right-click' menus!) but it's the enormous and permanent effect it's had on other programs - especially VideoImpression 2.

It's that damage that I'm trying to fix, and I think it involves keeping spare 'uncorrupted' versions of the hidden and system files that Super changes, so I can swap them in and out between using it and other programs.. Failing that, I'll just have to 'quarantine' Super on one machine and not let it near anything else.

Maybe erightsoft can come up with a version that doesn't trample all over the operating system and dlls one day.. and that maybe doesn't argue with firewalls about whether it should go online every time it is launched..

    I live in hope lol

Other video software is now affected - for example 'SolveigMM AVI Trimmer' now produces upside-down AVI movies...

I think the inversion is happening at the encoding stage - WinAmp plays AVI movies the right way up, unless they were produced by the affected programs..

Zwei-Stein is still working ok, and says it's using Cinepak (or similar) codecs to code AVIs.

If anyone knows how to restore the right codecs to AVI Trimmer and to VideoImpression 2 I'd be immensely grateful...

And how can I undo whatever 'Super Converter' did to my system?

Win 2k SP4 here - no system restore points

    (Aaarrghghgh!!)

I no longer use Super and I am unsure of using Super ever again because of what I found it does. One it seems unless you do a system restore on windows you can't install super april 2006 if you have super 2007 installed, it installs ac3 filter without asking, avi synth plugins without asking, messed up my .ogm playback in windows media player and I am unsure of what else it does.

    Thanks for that, Milardo..

    Any information helps!

I noticed that a new folder was installed in 'Program Files', called 'AviSynth 2.5'. Inside that was a folder called 'plugins', which contained three files:
    colors_rgb.avsi
    DirectShowSource.dll
    TCPDeliver.dll

Maybe we'll find out what all the bits and pieces are that 'Super' adds..

I ran 'Sherlock Codec Detective' and found the following list, but I can't tell which were put there (or removed) by 'Super'.

(By the way - running Win2kSP4 here)

First off, 'Sherlock' said that an audio codec was missing:
    AC3Filter()
    and two video codecs:
    CoreAVC Video Decoder()
FLV Video Decoder (but FLV Player, for example, works)

Here's the list - if anyone knows which ones are put there by 'Super' - that would be a great help

DO you have a system restore point that is before the 'super' install

then use system restore, and use your other programs

IF you want to use super, set a restore point manually , install an run super, then un-install and 'restore'

more steps maybe, but easier than trying to keep two sets of codecs or dlls and swapping them, ( because of registry settings that go with the codecs )

last night I downloaded a trial version of Ulead video toolbox 89.6 megs

today I installed it, but first i set a restore point, and when i did the install i used 'total uninstall' (nice piece of software)

long story short, the install took a long time, and then the program failed each time I tried to run it, even after rebooting, and it even messed up my USB wifi adapter the PC didn't even see it plugged into the USB port

i ran the uninstaller and 'totals' remover and then did the system restore

just to get my wifi working

MORAL you have to be prepared for problems, so they don't become permanent

I've done some more digging and found the following things added by Super 2007, and which didn't go away when I uninstalled the application - others may find the list useful.

BUT: Read the stuff I've put at the very end, about Zoom Player.

    Anyway - here goes:

I found these things added by Super which wouldn't uninstall:

    In WINNT:

    meta4.exe
    MOTA113.exe
    x2.64.exe

    and in WINNT\system32:
    AVSredirect.dll
    avisynth.dll
    CoreAAC.ax <-- system file
    devil.dll
    i420vfw.dll
    RLSpeexDec.ax <-- system file
    RLTheoraDec.ax <-- system file
    RLVorbisDec.ax <-- system file
    smab.dll
    x.264.exe
    yv12vfw.dll
    And a folder called
    ShellDHCP

    WINNT\system32\ShellDHCP:
    system.ini
    win.imi
    cygz.dll

Plus a new folder in Program Files:
    AviSynth 2.5

    AviSynth 2.5\plugins

    in which were:

    colors_rgb.avsi
    DirectShowSource.dll
    TCPDeliver.dll

The cygwin dlls were in the folder where Super lived - they uninstalled along with the main Super program files.

Now then - here's the embarrassing bit:

Removing *all* the above did not cure my problems with WinAmp, VideoImpression2 or AVITrimmer.

So I looked at what else I'd installed around that time (remember I'm on Win2kProSP4, no system restore points possible).

    Guess what..

At the time I installed 'Zoom Player' I got a new folder in Program Files, called 'ffdshow'.

I removed the whole of the ffdshow folder from Program Files, cleaned up the registry as usual (CCleaner - excellent program) and Voila! - everything was working perfectly again.

So maybe I was too quick to knock Super - I was upset by the fact that it installs stuff in WINNT and WINTT\system32 without asking and then won't remove them..

When I'm less tired and feeling very brave, I might try re-installing 'Super' - but at the first hint of trouble - it'll be out the window and into the garbage along with ZoomPlayer..

Thanks again for all your help, guys

I'll let you know what happens

It might also be a good idea to ask some of your questions over at the SUPER forum ( http://www.erightsoft.com/Supforum.html ) - but I'm not entirely confident about the ability to get an answer over there.

i have ffdshow as well as SUPER 2007 installed, but not ZoomPlayer... so i'm keeping a close watch on them...

FWIW, and not condoning any program that installs other software without asking or at least making it clear what is does, SUPER does not install avisynth in Program Files. It does install a folder called Aisynth 2.5, and a subfolder called Plugins, into which is installs the plugins it uses itself. These appear to be set up this way so it's paths in it's avs scripts reference a known location. If you have avisynth installed elsewhere, with your own set of plugins that are explicitly referenced you should have no issues.

    Thanks everyone!

Yup - Gunslinger - I know Super doesn't install 'avisynth' in Program Files. But it *does* put 'avisynth.dll' in 'WINNT\system32'. It puts a folder of plugins, called 'AviSynth 2.5\plugins\...' into Program Files.

But as I said - I think it is more likely to be the 'ffdshow' folder full of weirdness installed in Program Files by Zoom Player that caused the main problems - like Bjs said too.

I'm working up the courage to have another go at Super - but I'm still feeling iffy about a program that puts stuff everywhere without asking, and intercepting paths and changing system files.. and any program that puts a file called 'devil.dll' into a place like 'WINNT\system32' has got to be a bit scarey - and Super tries to go online every time it's launched... (I don't let it, btw).

I'm encouraged that at least the cygwin.dll and cygz.dll were in the Super program folder in Program Files, rather than buried in WINNT somewhere as I think they were in earlier versions of Super. (Although I did find it had added 'WINNT\system32\ShellDHCP\cygz.dll' - see earlier post).

Rancid - no, I don't know either - I suspect it's to do with putting things in a path upstream from where they should be, or redirecting to the new ffdshow codecs by means of altered registry keys..

Ai Haibara - Yes, I thought maybe the Super Forum would be a more sensible place to put this thread, but I don't seem to be able to register lol. Also, I was in a hurry and 'newbies' could only post here, rather than in a 'Super' bit of 'VideoHelp.com'. The admin says somewhere that they'll move a thread if it's in the wrong place - but hey, I still got all this help..

Thanks everyone - I'll let you know what happens when I try 'Super' again.

Actually, it was more a thought that they might be better able to answer the what-files-get-installed-where and what-registry-keys-get-written (etc.) questions. But they do seem to tend to go quiet on that forum when you start asking about the internals, so I don't know.

sorry about that, i must have been tired

there is a program call 'erunt' ( get it ) free download,, it will back up all the different sections
of win2K registry, find and download 'total uninstaller'

after you have fixed your current problems, you will find these 2 softwares very useful

use erunt, before making and install, use total to do the install and the un-install if needed

and then restore the reg with the erunt backup file

Ai Haibara - I think I had preconceptions about Super - I did not expect them to give away any 'secrets' especially as they have been subject to criticism for their programming methods in the past.. Besides - people here were being helpful and the Super Forum seems to make it difficult to register - dunno why...

Wizard - Hey no problems - we all get tired lolol - and thanks for the program suggestions - I'll go check them out - but last time I looked 'Total Uninstaller' was not free - but maybe it's not expensive and will be worth the money Did you ever try 'CCleaner v1.36.430'? Not quite the same function, but seems to be a good piece of freeware..

    Thanks again
