Virtualdub and LAME MP3

The LAME MP3 encoder in Virtualdub is showing only ABR option under 128kbps. Is there any way to get CBR option? I am trying to compress 22khz audio.

Use the other MP3 codec. I don't think you'll get a 128kbps option at 22hz but the Frauhofer codec only compresses to constant bitrate MP3.

Your other option is to choose 44hz/128kbps CBR in the Lame codec.

It's TV capture and I found 256kbps DivX is good enough. 128kbps MP3 is basically using 33% of the file for audio, which is quite an overkill.

I guess the other codec is from Frauhofer. It offers only up to 56kbps. But probably good enough. Any way to hack the LAME codec?

Lame is opensource. No need to hack it, you can modify it all you like. The limit is just from the ACM interface though, lame cli, dll, lib, etc. don't have the restriction. In fact the cli encoder will auto down sample for you for lower bitrates.

I don't know about Lame but Ulead VideoStudio v10 has the setting.

In your original post, you stated you were trying to compress MP3 at 22,050hz at 128kbps CBR.

I would not recommend capturing to DivX but would capture lossless (Huffy or Lag) video and wave audio and then compress in Virtualdub to whatever specs you want. XviD at no lower than 1200 bitrate and 44,100hz MP3 at 128kbps (48hz if my card would capture at that rate) is my choice.

The 256kbps that you mention for DivX is crap for bitrate so you might as well compress the audio to 11,025hz at 8kbps Mono. Obviously, by the looks of DivX file in your original post, filesize is much more important than file quality.

I assume that's because of the low quality captured file that you are trying to compress. The file that I have open in Virtualdub right now will compress to 320kbp/s 44,100hz Stereo with the Fraunhofer encoder (it also has the 64kbp/s at 22.050hz compression that you want). With the Lame codec, I could compress to 320kbp/s 44,100hz Stereo CBR or as low as 32,000hz 96kbp/s CBR

I'm not a hacker. My suggestion, if you want more compression options is to capture as uncompressed wave. The more compressed the captured audio file is, the less compression options you will get.

I think Fraunhofer Pro MP3 codec has the settings (64Kbps CBR).

You would select MPEG layer-3 in virtualdub then check 'show all formats'.
