Hi all
Running Windows XP SP2, P4 2.2ghz. 1 gig of ram.
I have a 7.41 gig mpeg 2 file, dvd quality settings already, I want burned onto a DVD+R DL.
I am using Nero 6 patched, and a Sony DRU-810A dvd burner.
I get the following error when I go to compile the DVD:
Unable to prepare data for recording. Prepare session failed. Transcoding of video failed.
Here is the text file of the error log.

Nero is not a good tool for encoding, authoring or for burning DL discs, IMO.
If your video is already a DVD compliant, you just need to author it. Nero usually tries to re-encode, compliant or not. If it's not compliant, you will need to encode it to DVD complaint video and audio. Then author it and burn it. For DVD specification and format, look to the upper left for 'WHAT IS' DVD.
There are freeware encoders and authoring programs available. For authoring, try DVDAuthorgui or GUI for DVD Author. ImgBurn does much better than Nero for DL burning. especially with the layer breaks. Finally, Verbatim+ DL is about the only consistently dependable DL media out there.
Is that all your log file? It seems to stop before any burning is started? -
I think he means author, authoring is the process of taking mpeg2 and converting it into the vobs and info files
authoring does NOT mean demuxing
for a DL this is two sets, the first set to be burned at one layer and the second set to burned at the other layer
the info for the layer break is also in these files
unless I miss understand the process
you might try something movie factory OR video studio
then burn with imgBurn
for my own projects, NOT downloads, i prefer ADS tech DVD express, hardware capture and hardware encoding, to mpeg2, then I author ( edit scenes add sound track etc..) after the authoring process is completed and encoded, I burn with a separate burner software
dvdxpress came with movie factory so that is what is usually use, the quality is good , though it is a bit slow, -
Hello again all.
I tried to post another error log, but the web page wasn't allowing me to post for some reason when the post was that big.
I took the file and cut it in half, and then inserted both files into Nero 6. I got as far as a burn that only did 2/3 of one of the layers before I got an error message and an expensive coaster.
I already had the latest version of Nero 6, but it was suggested by someone at CompUSA to see if there was a firmware upgrade for my Sony dvd burner.
I flashed my burner up to the latest version, and viola, it worked.
Thanks again for everyone's help. -
apollo1980 - Please take a look at
http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/pgcedit_guide/burning_with_pgcedit/burning_with...pgcedit_v2.htm
and scroll to the bottom for an explanation as to why you should NEVER burn DVDs with Nero. Not only does Nero ignore the 32K gap between BUPs and IFOs but it has been reported that it sets the layer break wrong in dual layer discs. The fact that your burn "worked" doesn't mean that you'll be able to play it correctly.
I recommend that you use PgcEdit to create ISOs and that you burn with ImgBurn, but you can use Nero if you just want to do it the quick and easy way and don't care if your discs will work in the future. -
jman:
Thanks for the link...and the knowledge.
I have burned two disks so far and have played them back on my home dvd player just fine.
I will take it into consideration, however.
BTW, it says in the link you posted it is in reference to reauthorized disks.
By taking a raw mpegs and creating the disk from scratch, I am assuming that I am ok. I am not ripping and then reburning, as I am making homemade dual layer disks from my own mpegs.
Thanks again! -
apollo1980,
I can understand your reluctance to fix what doesn't appear to be broken, but in the long run, you would be better off following jman98's advice to use ImgBurn for burning dvd-video , especially for dual layer.
The 32k gap problem applies not only to re-authored disks, but also to any dvd where a ifo/vob pair's total size is less than 32k. You can open the VIDEO_TS folder and visually scan the files to see if it's going to be a problem, but that's just making added, and unnecessary, work. The guide by blutach also doesn't mention that 32k gaps are just as important on single layer as dual layer, but they are.
Another factor, when burning dual layer, is nero just puts the layer break at what it considers the best place, which is not necessarily the best place for a smooth viewing transition. ImgBurn allows you to choose where to put the layer break, even allowing you to preview the video to see exactly the best place to put the layer break.
One last thing...in your first post, you mention the size of the video is 7.41 gb and it sounds like it's already compliant, yet nero failed while transcoding. Transcoding already compliant video wastes time, and lowers the quality, without any benefit. If you can't get nero to author without doing that, redwudz's suggestion would save you time and increase the quality of your finished project.
EDIT: Removed one out of place word that the cat obviously added when I wasn't looking. -
Funny how things work out...
I just had back to back coaster burns with my latest attempt at making a dvd (new video files this time, not the same as mentioned before).
Well, I believe nero makes a video_ts folder of what I wanted burned before burning the disk.
Could I just take the video_ts and move that over to imgburn and let 'er rip? -
apollo1980,
You can use this guide to burn a VIDEO_TS folder with ImgBurn. If your project isn't dual layer, just ignore the layer break parts of the guide. -
NERO ULTRA 6.0 DOES NOT RECONGINIZE ANY 2.4 DUAL LAYER DVD, BUT IT DOES RECONGINIZE VERBATIM DUAL LAYER DVDS. USE imgburn AND DOWNLOAD THE USERS GUIDE ALSO. ALSO I CONTACTED NERO ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND NERO WILL NOT ANSWER BACK ON THIS SUBJECT. ANOTHER GOOD REASON FOR NOT BUYING ANY MORE NERO PRODUCTS.

Thanks for the suggestions one and all.
Now perhaps a little off topic, how do I tell where the layer change is on disks I have already burned with nero 6 only? Is there a way to look at the burned disk and see exactly where the layer change takes place?
Since using ImgBurn that's not an issue with those given disks, since I assigned the layer change point.
Thanks again one and all.
