Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I snagged
Blockbuster's Superbowl "How To Use A Mouse" ad, dropped the
FLV onto iSquint, and got an MP4 file (28 seconds for the ad).
    So far so good.

I opened it in QuickTime Pro (7.1.3 under 10.4.8) and it played
fine. I went to export it as a WMV, and the result was half of
the ad (14 seconds). I tried another download (Blockbuster stuff
excised, 14 seconds). Same process. Same result. The WMV was 7
    seconds long, again exactly half.

What's going on? How can I correct the problem?

    Help!!!

Never mind. Seems with the free Flip4Mac, QT will only export
one half of the video, up to a max of 30 seconds.

The Flip-folk want you to spend $49 to upgrade to Studio.

I believe I can get the same capability (and more) with
    VisualHub for $23.

  3. why would you want to export as a wmv file if you have it in flv format?

Because I have a friend who doesn't know how to deal
    with any other video format.

It's easier to give her what she knows than to teach her
    anything new.

Use VLC to recode to WM1 or WM2. It's free.

Open File> click Streaming Saving, in the new window click Browse at the top to give it a default file name. Amend the name .wmv, Play File Locally, under transcoding options for video and audio check both, choose wm1 or 2 and as high a bit rate as you can afford for each.

Well worth the $49. for Flip4Mac. V-Hub doesn't come close to the quality and features. Here's the F4M general spec: supports WM7, 8, 9, 9 Advanced, ISO MPEG 4 V1.0 & V1.1, Microsoft MPEG 4 V2 & V2 along with multiple audio codecs. Web streaming. Import/export, FCP compatible, etc.
