Hi, i was wondering what the best quality DVD-R were to buy. I always notice that the ones I buy at the store seem to scratch very easily but the ones i rent at the video store hold up much better. Is there a reason for this and can I buy the same ones that they use for DVD movies at blockbuster?

Verbatim 16x DVD-R discs are the best that you can buy easily at a retail store. They are often on sale at either BEST BUY or OFFICE MAX.

The other top-of-the-line DVD-R is Taiyo Yuden. You can buy them direct from a place called RIMA.COM in either 8x DVD-R or 16x DVD-R with some people saying that the 8x DVD-R is a bit better made than the 16x DVD-R but either way you can't go wrong.

As far as quality DVD-R discs go that's about it. Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

    P.S.
Please note that Verbatim still makes 8x DVD-R discs but some recent reports from users seem to indicate that they are not being made as well as the old days and to stick with the 16x DVD-R discs if buying Verbatim.

As to the commercial disk's being more scratch resistant ... it's possible that the material used is most likely superior .

The only thing we discovered which increases the scratch resistance is to spray the bugger's with diesel and wipe it off ... the same affect it dose to car paint job's which makes the product brittle on the face side ... you may want to polish the disc off with mint toothpaste to get rid of the smell .

Ahh ... the smell of burning deisel first thing in the morning is greate ... but not if it's got flame's and they are shooting 20 feet out of the dvd player

It sounds like scratch-resistance is a major concern, so perhaps Verbatim's VideoGard product is the answer. I can't say that it really works from personal experience, but I was intrigued when it cropped up in a post a few days ago.

I usually buy their regular (non-VideoGard) 16X DVD-R's when they go on sale at the local Best Buy, and have been very satisfied.

    I'd suggest Mitsubishi (Verbatim) discs.
Sony and Taiyo Yuden are good second choices too.
