I tried using Virtual Dub, but I don't have Lame encoder for the audio and the result is audio with no video (strange). I use xvid for video encoder and no encoder for the audio.
For video, I use fast recompression and for audio I use full. Then I created a avs file (to work with Avisynth):

    DirectShowSource(".\filename1.wmv", fps=25.00)

Because I think that wmv is 25fps (but not sure). I use windows media player then open the wmv file, then file > properties. I get 15 minutes length and 225kbps

    Any help on this?
    Thank you!

    Slowly, and from the top:
What do you have (source file)?
What do you want to end up with?

If you haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave an MPV file, why would you put WMV in your AVS script?

    Problem solved !

  5. MPV is an elementary stream. If it's DVD compliant (25fps and 720x576 usually), then it's ready for authoring for DVD. It just needs the audio.

VirtualDubMpeg2 should let you open WMV files.

    http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/index.html

Edit - Yup, just tested it.

Ok, I'm not at home, so I ask first (can't test it).
After opening the wmv file with VirtualDubMpeg2... what do I do?

    Thanks!!

That's up to you depending on how you want to save the audio and video. Check out one of the dozens of VirtualDub guides on converting from one format to the other.

    Here's proof that it works.

    x.wmv

    x.avi

When I open an wmv file, I get this error:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format WMV2 (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video..."

Where can I get such codec (and what codec)?

    Thanks.

I can't find the guide "convert wmv to avi" or wmv to anything... can you point to a specific guide?

I just want to demux the wmv file so I can convert it eventually to dvd compatible files.

    Thanks.

ffdshow will have the WMV2 VFW support. Install and choose the following. Close out of VirtaulDub while you do this.

  14. Hello there!

I am new to this site, but I need your help. I tried to add an mpv file from my computer to YouTube. I copied it from a DVD, although it is a video of me performing in a live show. YouTube allowed me to upload it, but it failed to be generated, due to being an incompatible format. How can I convert this mpv file, that is still on my computer, into any format accepted by YouTube, or LiveVideo.com even? I believe the formats accepted are: avi, mpg, mpeg, mov, dvr-ms, mpe, mp4, mp2, asx, asf, wmv, 3g2, 3gp, divx, flv and swf.

    Please help!

    Andrew

Still can't figure it out. I'm no expert.
ffdshow... then what? virtualdub? ffmpeg? How?
Windows Movie Maker? hm? SUPER? None of them worked for me.

    My WMV files are:
    video is 192kbps 4:3 WMV2
    audio is 40kbps 32MHz 2channels

SUPER could convert but don't have the correct specs (no 32MHz audio for example)

I need to convert it so I can make it into DVD.
I could use DVD Lab or SVCD2DVD if I had an .avi or .mpg

    Please help.

    Thanks.

Really, the simplest way would be to use ConvertXtoDVD - you'll be done with the headache.

BTW, how long is the video - 1hr or less, or more than 1hr ?

Hey Andrew - MPV is supposed to only be the video portion of an MPEG file. If your MPV file has Video AND Audio, just rename the extension to .MPG - That should do it.

    Thanks Soopafresh. I'll try that.
My WMV is 1.5 hours. Why? It'll take long? Size will be too big?

My video is less than 20 minutes. I'll try what you have suggested. Thanks!

It gives me "error while decoding stream #0.1" and keeps going...
    I wonder what's causing it?

Man, you must really like that WMV file.

Download this http://www.bestsharing.com/files/QKmCFTj226007/wmv_prep.zip.html , unzip, make sure you rename your WMV to mymovie.wmv and put in same folder

    Like This:

    ffmpeg.exe
    mencoder.exe
    mymovie.wmv
    normalize.exe
    pthreadGC2.dll
    ReadMe.txt
    ssrc_hp.exe
    WMV_prep.bat

Double click on WMV_prep.bat and it will begin creating a very high quality XVID AVI with WAV audio that you can encode with ConvertXtoDVD. It will take around 1-2 hrs for the AVI to be created. Make sure you have at least 4GB of free disk space.

_mymovie.wmv.avi <----- Give this to ConvertXtoDVD
    ffmpeg.exe
    mencoder.exe
    mymovie.wmv
    normalize.exe
    pthreadGC2.dll
    ReadMe.txt
    ssrc_hp.exe
    WMV_prep.bat

    I'll try that. Thanks!

Oh yea, one more problem (sorry, lol). The wmv is actually 4 wmv files.
I joined them using Steeper... but what if file #2 has different 'stuff'? I noticed it leaves junk on the final (joined) wmv upon major picture changes... (hope I explain that properly...).

What can I do then ?

You have to get back to the original 4 files. Rename them to anything you want, just NO spaces in the name. Put them ALL in the same folder, Just like above. Double click WMV_prep.bat.

Sorry, but I'm getting lost in all this and I am normally quite computer literate. This is all new to me though and I can't seem to get it to work. All I am trying to do is upload, to YouTube and/or LiveVideo.com, a small drama programme that I star in (as William Wallace). As I said, it's only about 20 minutes (edited), but it won't be accepted in the format it is in. It has to be one of these: avi, mpg, mpeg, mov, dvr-ms, mpe, mp4, mp2, asx, asf, wmv, 3g2, 3gp, divx, flv and swf (for LiveVideo anyway).

    Is it possible at all?...

So this ffmpeg program will make it all work? (make all same bitrate etc etc)
You made the .bat just for me?

You betcha. What specifically is your error now? We might as well figure it out.

Some error duplicate frame etc, one crash but it kept going.
Tested a few avi (result) files, all good. Love it. Thanks a ton!

Now, to learn your .bat... so confusing.

Thanks for your help! OK, so to put it in simple terms (for me), I have this little film on a DVD and I want to upload it. There are several files, but I think the main one is VIDEO_TS, which is a BUP file. There is another BUP file, which is VTS_01_0. The others files are .IFO and .VOB and there are 11 files in total in the folder. I am not sure if they all make up the programme, but that's all that can be viewed on the disc.

Does this make it clearer? I am puzzled.

Ironically, I'm playing the part of Wallace Williams in "Badheart".

OK, download and run VOB2MPG and it'll very quickly convert the files to a single MPG format file. Google/Youtube, etc will accept MPG files.

Badheart? Is that a spoof of Braveheart? All the best with that and I would like to see it. Our amateur club, The Elderslie Kirk Players are currently rehearsing our new comedy show, but the Wallace show we did was on the request of Renfrewshire Council on the 700th Anniversary of William Wallace's death and it was outdoors on a lovely day in August 2005, performed in the grounds of the Wallace Monument in Elderslie (his birthplace).

For more details, see my profile at http://www.myspace.com/andrewerroch

I will try your latest suggestion now, to see if I can get these files uploaded.

    Cheers!

Well done Soopafresh, we're almost there! That program you suggested did indeed convert those files into MPEG format, although there turned out to be two copies of the same film, for some reason. The only problem now is there is no sound except white noise, like at the start of HBO TV programmes. There is another folder entitled AUDIO_TS on the DVD, but it appears to be empty. How can I now get the sound from the DVD and combine it with these new MPEG files I have?...
