Hi and thank you in advance for your attention.

I downloaded an Avi file from the Net and I want to burn it to DVD including subtitles. It's an Xvid-encoded file and everything in my system seems to be OK: The latest version of the codec is installed properly, GSpot reports it with no problems and the file seems to be OK.

If I load the Avi file directly into TMPGEnc Plus, it is properly recognized and I can convert it to Mpg as expected. The thing is, I can't use that method since I want to incorporate subtitles into the movie, so I use VirtualDub's frameserver mode for that: Load the movie into VirtualDub (which is properly detected - no video or audio issues), load the Subtitler filter with the SubStation Alpha script, make sure that preview shows it fine and then create a Vdr file using the frameserver mode. When I try to load it into TMPGEnc plus, I receive a "...vdr can not open, or unsupported" message (again, this doesn't happen if I load the original Avi directly into TMPGEnc). I've tried changing settings of VFAPI plug-ins with no success. I highly appreciate your input on this. Thank you in advance!

Add ".avi" to the end of the file name.

    "filename.vdr.avi"

  3. Did you run AUXSETUP.EXE in the VirtualDub folder? That installs the frameserver handler for VirtualDub. TMPGEnc works fine with VirtualDub's (and all the variants) frame server.

Thanks for your replies! Here's what I've tried so far:

    - Add ".avi" to the end of the file name. "filename.vdr.avi". Didn't work.

    - "Copy this msvcr70.dll to your WIN/SYSTEM32 folder and restart VirtualDub". Didn't work.

    - Readavs.dll vfapi plugin didn't work.

    - Install the ProxyOn (frameserver handler). Already installed, but re-installed it. Didn't work.

    - "If TMPGenc gives you an error when opening the video.vdr.avi click on Option->Environmental settings. And this window appear, click on VFAPI plugin and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and select Higher priority". Didn't work.

I've encoded frameserved movies before using VDub and 99% of them work fine. This problem already happened before with other movies (2, I think) but since I didn't plan to put subtitles, I just used TMPGEnc plus directly to encode them. No problem. But now I need the frameserver and it doesn't work in TMPGEnc with this particular file.

Thank you again for your replies!

Hey! I've just uploaded to the Net a short avi file (2min. 14 secs., 16.54 MB) which shows exactly the same behavior as my movie. I really appreciate it if some of you take the time to download it and test it (convert it to a DVD-compliant file -individual elementary streams since I use CBR linear PCM audio- with TMPGEnc Plus through VirtualDub's frameserver mode). Everything is fine with the file: VirtualDub opens it with no errors and same for TMPGEnc if loaded directly, but when I try to open the vdr file from VDub, the error appears. Here's the link for downloading the file:

This link is supposed to work as well:

(The links will be available for the next 14 days or 500 downloads)

Thank you in advance for your time!

  6. I downloaded the fiest file, opened it in VirtualDub 1.6.15, frameserved to TMPGEnc Plus 2.521.58.169, converted to MPEG with no problems at all. Did the same with VirtualDubMod 1.5.10, same result. I'll try again later with some SRT subs.

I used the TextSub filter to add SRT subtitles -- saving as Xvid AVI went fine. When frameserving to TMPGEnc, TMPGEnc crashed when opening the file -- no error message, the window just closed.

Looking at the frame size of the AVI file, 640x270, I guessed that might be a problem. After resizing to 640x272 everything went fine.

After reading your post, I re-encoded the file with VirtualDub using the same codec (XviD)'s default settings. Didn't resize frames, just let VDub to re-encode without further processings. Now frameserving is working with this new file! Size went from 16.5 MB to 19.6 MB and no apparent quality loss. Still don't know what causes the problem, but I hope this will be good research material for you experts. Thank you very much!
