What subtitle file format is needed so that my JVC DivX/XviD DVD player will play them? I've burned avi (XviD) files into a dvdr and it plays fine but what file format do I need to convert for subtitles? I have subtitles for the avi files in SubRip (.srt) format but they're not being read as subtitles on the player. Can anyone help me? thanx and really appreciate it.

  2. I don't know the JVC players but SRT is the most commonly supported format.

Make sure the name is the same except for the extension:

    MOVIE.AVI
    MOVIE.SRT

Try using 8.3 filenames if you aren't already.

Still does not work even with titles 8 characters or less. THey are external .srt files.

Like stated, most players do .srt subs.
What does your manual say about AVI subs?

  5. With some players you have to manually select the SRT file first, then the AVI. Some automatically display them. Some you have to press the Subtitle button on the remote. Some prefer the subtile files to have names like:

    MOVIE.AVI
    MOVIE.ENG.SRT
    MOVIE.SP.SRT
    MOVIE.FR.SRT

F*ckin' bloody hell. I can't find my manual. Still looking...

Edit: Well the manual does not say anything about AVI subs or subtitle files along with Divx files although it does talk about DivX files' supported formats, etc but nothing on subtitles related to DivX playback. I've emailed tech support to see if my JVC XV-NP10S supports subtitles with Divx playback. Still waiting...;/

My player doesn't allow me to select the SRT file it just shows the .avi files and that's it. I pressed the Subtitle button on the remote but that doesn't work either. Next time, I'll try renaming it to MOVIE.ENG.SRT. In fact, I'm not even sure if it supports Subtitles for Divx Playback at all.

If it is DivX certified then it will support divx files with xsubs.

I see... I'm now using Sub2Divx to embed the srt subtitles into the avi, which consequently creates a new .divx file that is readable by my DVD player. Hopefully the subtitles will work properly.

  10. I think only Divx Ultra certification guarantees subtitle support:

The player should play xsub format.

I got curious so I did a web search on this. It doesn't look good. Looks like xsub is your only chance.

Stealth3si - I'm not trying to state the obvious or insult you at all, but in the future before buying any DVD player I recommend doing research to see what people who own it say about it rather than buying it and hoping it does what you want.

I heard that even if it's "Divx" certified, it will also play a .divx file w/ subtitles support but not with menus or chapters support, like when you create .divx file from "DivX Author": https://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t267432.html

Which brings me to another question. Will it play an avi or divx file that has two audio tracks?

Sub2Divx converts the .srt files into xsub and then "fuses" it into the avi file, creating a .divx file. hopefully that's the same as srt2bmp and fuse tool. besides, i can't find srt2bmp and fuse tool, even the zipfiles that i download have nothing in them.

FYI, the dvd player was a gift long time ago and never used it ever since until now. Otherwise, yes, I'd always do research before I bought my own.

Terrible news! Some subtitles work yet some don't and I used the same methods. Not only that the JVC randomly skips seconds of certain movie files both .avi or .divx (hickups I suppose) and has an old xvid codec which improperly decodes some files that are encoded with new xvid codecs (colors are blotchy and rainbow like). Instead I'm watching them on my PC now, much easier and less hassle, unless the have a new firmware update but I can't find it.

  18. LisaB's guide to the Philips DVP-642 has some information that is applicable to many other players. You might find something useful there:

    http://www.jarnot.com/twiki/bin/view/Public/DVP642LisaBsAVIGuide

Skipping could be a sign of bad multiplexing (easily fixed by remultiplexing), too high a bitrate, GMC, QPEL (all three of which require reencoding), etc.

    Nope -- nothin' useful there.

The file's bitrate is 877 Kbps. The file is NOT GMC or QPEL. It's quant. matrix is H.264. Even after re-multiplexing it still skipped (both using Lisa's guide by interleaving the AC3 audio by 64 ms and also splitting the video and audio and then muxing them back together.)

    Thanks for trying.
