    Hi folks

please can someone help as ive tried everything and run out of ideas, i have some video clips on my hard drive that ive had for ages, some are mpeg 1 some are wmv, i went to play them last night using wmp11 and some played fine, while others only played video with no sound, i tried to play them using the nero player and they played fine, i then unistalled wmp 11 and rolled back to wmp 10, tried it again but they still wouldnt play!!!, i then recorded a small video using my sony digital camera, i took it straight off the memeory card onto the pc and tried to play it , again no sound on wmp 11 but played fine using nero???, i downloaded a small program that checks for broken codecs but nothing was shown??, i really dont know what to do, can someone please please help me

P.s I did try one other thing, i put the video clip into nero vision and recoded again to mpeg1, only took about 30 seconds as its a small clip, i then opened it up in wmp11 and it played perfectly!!!!, i just dont want to do this with all my clips and i dont want to use nero all the time as i prefer wmp11

Open the clip in g-spot and see what codecs it uses and whether or not you have them.

In order to roll back to wmp10 , you need to follow this ms article correctly .

Hi, thanks for that, i did roll back to wmp10 the corrct way but it was still no good, the link you gave me seems to be the same sort of program as the previous poster put, but i will also give it a try, what i cant understand is why the clips play in nero vision, surely if there is a codec missing or corrupt it wouldnt play in anything???

I see people having troubles with WMP10/11 over and over again.
Why not get rid of that junk and get whats working best *for you* (not for some DRM-infected companies)?

All you need is divx codec, xvid codec, ffdshow codec (for subtitles and some few odd codec) and everything will play on your computer using basic WMP6 (yes it is still part of every windows, just search your comp for "mplayer2.exe").
If you want to play really *everything* you need to add i.e. PowerDVD (VCD/SVCD/DVD) and crapsters like QuickTime and RealPlayer (both need to be set by user in order to not steal other formats etc).

The page from ms dosent clearly explain the actual issue , being file's used by wmp10 are irreversibly replaced by updated version's from the installation of wpm11 ... the final word being from ms being that if their kb article's dont resolve the issue , you are forced to do a complete reinstall of the os ... nice one .

System restore cannot be used either .

I had a similar issue appear which was cured by updating the vga driver's for the geforce 6600 le ... idiot nvidia supplied the developer sli driver's for a non-sli unit , that I should have not received ... plagued with bsod's till I figured out what they had done ... now , the pc has not had one "bsod" , and no program lockups / crash's ... everything is normal .

The problem is , it is not as simple as being "software" only issue as there is the vga hardware and it's associated driver's to be considered .

Until I did this , I had the same problem's with video and audio ... some app's worked with certain file's , and refused or locked up on other's .

There is also an installer cleanup utitlity you might want to give a run ... some installer's leave junk behind which cause's all sort's of problem's , while the tool is designed for ms products , it can fix other installer's junk as well that got left behind ... curse sony quick tracks .

If you want dvd playback , then :

    (no xp) - Ifoedit + freedvdcodec + ac3filters + subfilter (trap's navigational error's in authored project's)
    Koolplaya + filters
    Avs dvd player

hi everyone, well i opened up the file i gpsot and it doesnt list the codecs in the right hand side of the screen, although it does suggest two at the bottom of the screen and the video plays fine when i test them out within g spot, g spot also tells me of 2 problems when i analize the codecs installed on my pc, i have pasted them below for you to see, not sure if this is part of my problem with the lack of sound???

    ACM Base MSACM.CEGSM ** Missing file: mobilev.acm
    ACM Base msacm.dvacm ** Missing file: C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ULEADS~1\Vio\dvacm.acm

please can someone take a look for me.

    thanks pete

Pete7769, can you give me more details about the streaming video without audio and WMP11? I have the exact same problem. I have reinstalled numerous times and installed codecs but nothing works.

    Thanks
