So I've downloaded some TV shows & tried to make a DVd from the AVI file with Nero & the audio is always out of sync
In the past I've always converted to dvd w/ DVDSant & authored w/ TMPGnc DVD Author but since I just got nero I thought I'd save a step since it will author right from the AVI file.
But if the audio is out of sync that's no good. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks,Mike

NeroVision - second rate converter and disk space hog. Not quite as bad as winAVI, but . . . OK - it's as bad as WinAVI.

If you want a simple solution, ConvertXtoDVD.

If you want to put in a little effort, then if it is in sync before hand and out after, try this

If it is out of sync before you convert, try this

First drop the AVIs into Gspot 2.60 and look for MP3 VBR audio. That's the most common cause of sync problems when encoding to MPEG from AVIs off the net.

The fix is usually to save out the audio as WAV format and encode it separately from the video. I convert the WAV to AC3 with ffmpeggui and use that and the converted video with the TDA authoring program.

If that's not the problem, is the sync error the same the length of the converted video or does it gradually get worse as the video plays?

Or try ConvertXToDVD. It will handle most VBR files. Others you will have to separate out the audio and encode as above. But you can save a step if you mux the WAV back with the AVI before you encode with ConvertX or Nero. VirtualDub Mod works well for that.

Well when I use DVDSanta it works fine. But it doesn't let you add chapters & menus.I would like one proramthat does it all. I just like the fact that with nero you can drop the file right in there & go from there. Some of these solutions seem to be adding steps.
So I take it that sync problems happen a lot with Nero? Or is there a fix for it? Or is there another good program that will do everything & keep the audio in sync?
I really don't want to seperate the audio or sync it up myself, It's just for TV shows I may have missed so I just need decent quality & as simple as possible. Thanks

Generally the cause is VBR MP3 audio. A lot of encoders have a problem keeping sync when encoding it to any other format. ConvertXtoDVD is more reliable than most.

The first post I gave you tells you how to quickly convert the audio to uncompressed wav before conversion, which should solve the problem.

Your other choice is to convert with DVD Santa, then use tmpgenc DVD author or similar to create you menus and add chapter stops.

The best solution is to get a player that will play the files without conversion. You can then put around 12 x 45 minute episodes to a disc.

Yeah I'm using DVDSanta- TMPGnc right now it it seems to work fine. I just got Nero for burning DVDs & thought it wascoolthat I could do it all at once. I may try the Virtualdub thing & see if that works. We'll see how it goes.
Oh also- is convertxtoDVD a better program than DVDsanta? Thanks,Mike

I believe it is much more reliable than DVD Santa. If nothing else it has one huge advantage if you are encoding 23.976 NTSC material. DVD Santa, WinAVI, NeroVision etc all encode this material to 29.970 fps, which will play, however they do this by creating duplicate frames. This causes jerkiness during playback, which is especially noticeable in zooms and pans. ConvertXtoDVD encodes this material correctly to 23.976 fps and adds 3:2 pulldown flags to the stream so the player plays them back correctly. I have not seen any other one-click-wonder do this.

I would burn the results with Imgburn 2 - the best burning tool for DVD Video.

I don't believe there is a free version of Nero. There is an OEM version that ships with many burners and is probably entitles to patches, but if you want the rest, you will have to pay for it.

If the icon changes it is because a different program has associated itself with the files. It hasn't changed the files at all. If you turn off "Hide Extensions for known file types" in Windows Explorer you will see that they are all still the same as they were.
