Just registered. This is my first post and I'm definitely not an expert. I downloaded an AVI file from a torrent in the UK (I'm in US) which was apparently ripped from a DVD. I tried converting this back to a DVD format to play on a standalone DVD player so I could watch it on my TV. It won't play. The message on the Sony DVD display is "Cannot Play" or is blank. The VOB plays just fine on my PC, so I'm thinking that it may have something to do with the region code but I'm not sure. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this. I used both Roxio version 8 and DVDFab Platinum without success. Thanks.

Making the assumption that this is in no way commercial copyrighted material we're dealing with:
    1) Head over to CONVERT left, and start reading the guides on AVI to DVD.
    2) Buy convertx2dvd and convert most AVIs to compliant Video DVD
    3) Get a DVD player with DivX/XviD playback, and never ever have to worry about this kind of conversion again.
Of these alternatives, I strongly suggest 3).
...and this is no region code issue - Possibly a TV system issue (PAL/NTSC)

Thanks, I appreciate the help. To ease your conscience, it's a DVD that the producers want folks to pass around so that awareness of the problems with GMO crops becomes more widespread. I didn't consider the PAL/NTSC issue but it does make sense. My Sony player is several years old, so I may have to think about investing in a new one. Again, thanks a lot.
