ac3 filter is causing media player classic to freeze up. everything works as it should when ac3 filter is NOT installed. I have tried version 1.06a to 1.11 stable and they all do the same thing. I am using SPDIF to my receiver.

Maybe you should try some other ac3 decoder..
. .. ffdshow seems pretty good.

Uninstall all codec all-in-one packages , they cause problems , and some install ac3 decoder's .
Remove ffdshow ... install when it's needed , then get rid of it .

    Go to start , programs , ac3filter , ac3filter config .
Click ok , then head to system tab .

Filter merit on the right , select "prefer ac3filter" if it isnt default , apply , ok , reboot .

    ----------------------------

Also note , while this appears to only affect media player classic , some program's can make system changes , or be running in the background the can conflict with other's ... disable all non-essential programs running in the background , by using hijackthis , scan , check mark those not required by system at start , let hijackthis fix those selected , reboot pc ... try again .

There is also a installer cleanup tool from ms ... clean's up after installer's that leave junk behind in the registry that can cause problems .

You don't need any filters for MPC you can just use the internal AC3 decoder and set it to SPDIF.

    this was checked by default.

I have never had any problems using ac3 filter before on the same computer until I formatted. pleas enote that i have a fresh install of windows xp on a brand new hard drive.

I just tried ffdshow and its doing the exact same thing as ac3 filter. My computer freezes up as soon as I exit media player and i have to manual restart.

    Maybe its my sound drivers.

Considering over time , much in the way software updates are applied ... so do changes in motherboard driver's .
Did you download the latest driver's for the current motherboard or did you use the one's supplied on cd with the motherboard ?

How is the spdif setup ... dongle type (could be faulty) , or onboard audio pin setup (check pin's , clean them , confirm setup) ?

Has the motherboard ever had it's bios updated ?

Just check the version of ac3filters I have ... 0.70b

Is audio onboard or pci / usb ? (onboard audio dose not have hardware buffer's) ... you might want to run memtest ... and replace the mouse , it may have a fault even though it appears to be functioning correctly ... (even the keyboard) ... I personally have seen this happen before , causing interference with video / audio playback .

As you can see , when it come's to video / audio playback ... almost anything can cause the problem ... start at the hardware end first and work up from there should find the problem causing the issue eventually .

What is the specific audio chipset used (written on top of chipset) .

And here is spdif setup from cd/dvd rom : http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/82/1

Just checked about the place , and quite a few are not happy with this chipset , and asus may not have an updated driver package available ... server problems as well ... but the issue dosent explain ac3 problem your having .

Have a read of this :

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archive/index.php/t-486325.html

Take a look at what JTAnderson posted on 12-27-04, 06:49 PM (just before halfway down) , and continue down from there .

I knew about windows media player ... but never played about in the dvd play back product's setting's ... just never bothered .

    ------------------

Downloading the latest drivers for the motherboard would be the first place to start off , but not guaranteed to work ... still worth a try though .

    ------------------

Do you have the sound effect manager in the control panel ... if so , it might be worth checking what settings are used ... as these thing's come first when controlling hardware , then other tool's become secondary ... in some case's if they dont match , it can cause problem's .

I just checked mine , and sure enough , ac3 was set to spdif ... but the control panel applet was else where ... 2 channel ... no major issue ... just couldnt get sub up and running till it was checked to spdif as well .

    -----------------

I tried the latest version of ac3 filters , and still dont have problems' here on 3 pc's with it .

Could the real problem not also be related to the mpc package you have installed ... bugs do get in occasionally from time to time .
I would prefer to get windows media player to do this first , then mpc if it's required after .

Try it in playback once it's setup without the spdif connected to the device ... could be receiving interference from the device ... an indictation of cable or device fault having developed ... it only need's to be small , and it's k.o ... lockup time on pc .
