Hi. I have seen those portable hdd with audio and video playback of all types of popular formats like DivX and mp3. From some of the screenshots of the bootup screen, it seems like they use the same type of firmware found in other similar dvd players. I was wondering whether there is a possible hack so that it can play rmvb files? It is kind of irritating to have to convert them to avi everytime. Although I'm not a programmer, it seems like if they use a similar firmware, then a hack of one device could work for the other devices too? I would really like to hear some responses regarding this because there is XBMC for the Xbox which runs basically everything and whether it is possible or not. Thanks.

Hacking the firmware isn't likely to help. The codecs needed to play the files are typically found in your player software, no the firmware. In the case of standalone players, there currently aren't any players that support rmvb. I suspect that is licensing issue and/or the fact that it isn't a popular format. That's the price you pay for using a proprietary format.
