    Hi,

I have an AVI back of an old movie with 4:3 acpect ratio that I am going to make DVD of. Is it possible to change the aspect ratio to 16:9? Is it advisable to do this?

    Thank you!

Of cource you can change aspect ratio, but if it's 4:3 to start with, you'll have to take portions out top and/or bottom.

    Thank you.

If I understood you right, it would be better to keep it 4:3, right?

I am not sure whether it is a factor but my TV is wide screen.

In the theater they just close the curtains a bit for 4:3 (Academy) aspect*. They don't chop the top and bottom off.

    Customers would demand money back.

    * looks like this on a wide TV.

The TV will also have a mode to stretch it horizontally making everyone look fat.

    edDV, thank you!

So, TV scree is a factor and probably the most important. If I have a widescreen TV, I ssume it would be better to change the aspect ratio.

    No no no !!!

You want to leave it at 4:3 and display it as 4:3 on the TV.

See the image that edDV provided? Most 16x9 WS TV's will center the 4:3 image and leave gray colored bars on either side (some TV's allow you to adjust it to black).

That would be the proper way to do it.

    FulciLives, thank you.

But why? What's good to have those grey bars? Or you mean the pic will be distorted?

    I am totally confused....

    Why do you think that?
You want this? There should be a button on your remote that does that.

    4:3 video should remain 4:3.

    edDV, thanks!

I see. My idea was that it is possible to make it 16:9 but keeping it undistorted.

You are right: I have those controls on my TV and even on one of the DVD players.
