The howto instructions on ffmpegX are a great idea, but they seem to alway suggest the use of Toast. Are there are free alternatives to toast for burning VCD and SVCD?
    Thanks,

SimplyBurns (freeware) burns bin/cue files (as generated for VCD). So do some other freeware and shareware packages.
The multitrack img files generated for SVCD are a bit tougher to burn without Toast. But there are workarounds if you keep the .mpg file:
GNU vcdtoolsX 1.1 could pack SVCD MPEG files in bin/cue format, but is officially no longer available. (Google has loads of dead links on this tool.)
VCDGearX packs SVCD MPEG files in bin/cue format using the mpg2bin option.

  3. You've got VCD Builder too. It'a freeware and builds VCD and SVCD.

I took a look at these and they might do the trick. I am starting out with some mp4 files. Do you have any specific suggestions?

You should be able to find detailed how-to guides in ffmpegX's documentation. A brief summary is:

    1) Use the (S)VCD presets.
    2) Run ffmpegx.
    3) Burn the resulting images onto CDR using the non-Toast programs mentioned by others. (Another free alternative is MissingMediaBurner).

I checked version tracker and it seems that MissingMediaBurner seems to have stopped development. It does not run on tiger.

I did find an alternative: burn
