This may be a dumb question but it sure won't be my first.![]()
I have an AVI file that has the audio out of sync by about 1 second. The audio comes in after the lip movement or whatever action takes place. If I strip the audio out of the file, delete the necessary amount from the beginning of the audio, and then put the audio back in I would think that I should be able to get it close enough to proper synchronization.
If I am correct in this, can someone tell me how to go about demuxing the audio and video and then putting the new audio file back together with the video? What programs would I use? I have AVI Demux but have never used it and after just taking a look at it, have no idea what to do with it.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
.....Gord

Try VirtualDub. Sometimes AVI files have incorrectly-encoded audio; if you open your AVI file and this is the case, VirtualDub will indicate it. If that's the case you may not need to delete audio from the file. In VirtualDub, go to the Audio menu and choose Compression; make sure it's set to No compression - this will give you a raw .wav file. Then go to file and choose Save WAV. Dump the wav somewhere on your disk. Then use any audio editor (Audacity is free and can do this) to delete the audio. Now re-open your AVI in VirtualDub. Under Video choose Direct Stream Copy (this will eliminate the need to re-encode video). Under the Audio menu, choose "WAV File" and choose the WAV you fixed. Now go to Compression and choose the compression you want. Now just save the AVI and you should have a fixed file.
More help, just ask.

Okay, I tried the method suggested by fmillion and this is what happened:
When I loaded the AVI file into VirtualDub there was no mention of there being a problem with the audio. I checked the Audio menu and "Compression" was grayed out. I saved a WAV file from the AVI and then attempted to load the AVI file into Audacity. I got a dialog box saying that it was importing MP3 file. According to the bar graph showing the import progress it seems to import it to about 60% and then just stalls. I let it run for about 30 minutes and it didn't get any further. I would assume there is something wrong with the MP3 file but am unclear as to how to delete it from the AVI file if I can't first open it.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

This is what I would do -
Load the file into AVIdemux
Cut a minute from the file using the A and B buttons
Save the one minute file, make sure video and audio is set to copy
Load the one minute file into AVIdemux
Tick the box next to shift and experiment until you get it right
When you have it right load the original file and use the settings you used for the minute fileHe's a liar and a murderer, and I say that with all due respect.
