  1. Ok, I have had a problem for a while when i try to auto-encode then burn to DVD using various programs. Nerovision, dvdsanta, convertxtodvd etc etc.

My computer shuts itself down (all programs then shuts down XP) Doesn't crash, it just shuts down.

I've checked my CPU temp when encoding and it reaches a max of 61C before the shutdown.

My motherboard is Asus A7V8X-X. There is no problem when just burning a DVD, or playing games etc. It's only when encoding.

I have thought it may have been a problem with codecs, but I have tried to get as many up to date ones as I can. (Although any advise on this would also be appreciated)

I have also checked PC case for dust and cleared out any excess.

I can provide anymore info if need be.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Your problem could be the BIOS setting being set to shutdown when the CPU reaches that temp. Go into the BIOS and increase the temp. setting to 65 degrees that may solve the problem. You may also consider imstalling another internal fan to reduce the temp.

Very likely a temp problem, yes. Check fan, heatsink & c for dust and stuff.

Video encoding and games (up to date games - not Solitaire) are the most processor intense things a PC can be asked to do outside of testbench utilities. As you're OK running games, then it looks like your problem might not be excess heat, especially as you've checked for fluff/crud in your HSF.
Trying the BIOS settings for overheat protection is always worthwhile, but also try disabling any Power Saving settings you've set.

  5. My auto-shutdown temp was 85C, I increased to 95C with no effect.

Bizarrely though I tried today and it worked fine.

    I didn't do anything differently....

    Weird.

  6. All power saving settings disabled.

It's now shutting down itself doing pretty much anything. Loading up Football Manager now shuts it down.

    Even simple browsing does.

Could it be a memory issue? I've got 512mb and it's been fine in the past...
