MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org), but it won't be any use to you if you don't run Linux. If you aren't running Linux, maybe you should have specified the OS of your PC in your post.

I'm not sure what options are available for Windows or Mac that are "freeware" or if any exist. If they do, nobody uses them very much. I tend to use "whatever came with my card" under Windows.

The TV card that you have is also important to know because if you can find freeware programs, they may not support your card. Expect the worst support for any USB based cards.

Yeah, I looked at his profile too, but the point I hoped to make is that I shouldn't HAVE to look at his profile to figure out what he's got. He should have told us in the original post.

I'm just tyring to educate a new guy that the less he tells, the less help he gets. New people always seem to think that if they keep a post to 1 or 2 sentences and leave out all details that they are more likely to get help than if they (gasp!) make a longer post with all the relevant info in it. The truth is that the more you tell, the more you can be helped.

Well, IMO, the Computer Details are there just so you don't have to write your full computer specs for each and every question...

But I agree that the oneliner strain of questions mostly are unanswerable.
To answer this one - The one shipped with your hardware.

For Windows users, GB-PVR works pretty well. I have a Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE. I guess he should've specified what capture card he uses/wants/will be getting.

Best ... that's really open to debate ... but ...

http://www.winavi.com/en/download/download.htm ... WinAVI Video Capture (the one right down the bottom)
Includes a text file with required user name and serial for registration ... work's fine for what it is ... free .

How the heck dose one go from windows specs to linux these days ??? ... if your smoking you know what ... hand it about .
