    I've had Nero 6 for a while now, it was only a trial version and it expired today. Something popped up and said "Your MPEG-4 codec has expired" then my computer wouldn't play dvd's. When I tried to right-click and press properties on my d drive, "Sonic Update Manager" wanted me to browse for a file to verify I have access to the files I was trying to use. [Before, my computer wouldn't play dvds and I changed the "Autoplay" option under properties to dvd movies and everything suddenly worked.] I didn't know what to do so I pressed cancel, only for the thing to keep loading again and again. I had to close it like 8 times for it to stop. Every time I tried to do something, "Sonic Update Manager" repeatly popped up so I just un-installed it all together.

    Since, I have tried many different software to play dvds like PowerDVD, VLC, and InerVideo. Nothing worked. I tried to change the autoplay mode again, but this time "dvd movies" wouldn't save. Every time I clicked okay and checked it, it had reverted back to "Music Files". I don't know if un-installing Sonic Manager effected that or not, although I'm sure my dvd player is not a Sonic product. Maybe I'm being paranoid. >_>

    Now, I tried re-installing Nero but the error message I get when I try to play dvds says "drive not ready".

    I'm so frustrated... I know my computer can play DVDs obviously so what's the problem?

    That is strange. Windows doesn't come with a MPEG-2 codec that is needed to play most DVDs. But Power DVD installs one and VLC doesn't need a codec because it uses it's own. I think you have other problems. A MPEG-4 codec is used for Divx and other AVI type files.

    Assuming you have a MPEG-2 video on your computer, try playing that. Or if it won't play, drop it into Gspot 2.60 and it will tell you the needed codec and if you have them. If you do seem to have codec problems, Codec Sniper may be able to clean up the damaged ones.

    You may have a drive problem if a MPEG-2 will play from your hard drive and not your DVD drive. Since you show XP in your computer details, you might consider doing a restore to a time before these problems and see if that helps.

    Someone else may have some other ideas.

    And welcome to our forums.

    Uninstall all codec's , and associated package's ... such as those all-in-one's ... they do a lot more harm than good .

    If ffdshow is installed ... take aim , and get rid of it .

    Download hijackthis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php
    Do a scan , and disable all non-essential startup rubbish ... quicktime , messenger , printer utilities , ect ... check those not required and hit "fix" , it create's a backup beforehand .

    Restart pc ... then

    A number of things can cause this annoying popup , try running the cleanup tool from here

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

    Then restart the pc after it .

    Followed by checking directshow filter's with the tool from this site

    http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm ... if it find's fault , let it fix them , and reboot pc .

    ----------------------

    Unistall all dvd playback product's , and reboot .
    Reinstall powerdvd , or the one that may have been supplied with the dvd burner only , reboot pc

    Right click on your dvd drive , go to properties , auto play tab , hit "restore default's" ... apply ... ok .

    Right click on file with the extension IFO , chose "open with" , choose program , select chosen default program , check the box below "always use ....." , then hit ok .

    Reboot pc ... and now try once more to play

    ============

    "it had reverted back to "Music Files".

    That's the first thing in the drop down list only ... nothing to get worried about .

    ============

    There maybe a remaining issue in the registry ... use erunt before using any registry cleaning tool first

    http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

    Remember you need to reboot the system for registry changes to take effect .

    ============

    Drive's main cable could be at fault .

    ============

    Warning : system restore .

    Any program installed after the chosen restore point creation date used for the restore , will have all their executable's nulled and will nolonger fuction ... these will need to be uninstalled , and reinstalled before they will work once more .

  4. Do you have both Nero and RecordNow installed on your machine? The presence of Sonic Update Manager suggests that you do. I found some time ago that they do not coexist happily on my computer. Not everyone has such problems, and it may no longer be true for later versions. To complicate things, having InCD installed as part of Nero may also cause trouble.

    Personally, I'd uninstall Nero and run the NeroCleanTool available at the Ahead website. Then troubleshoot from there, perhaps trying Redwudz' and Bjs' suggestions. I wonder if deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry may help?

    http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid1_gci961565,00.html

    Best to set a restore point first if you try that.

    Maybe someone else has some ideas?

    I'm on this step "Followed by checking directshow filter's with the tool from this site

    http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm ... if it find's fault , let it fix them , and reboot pc . "

    There seems to be an error with a Nero codec, but when I press the fix button, nothing happens. I've waited half an hour and nothing happened yet. I've pressed it a few times but it doesn't seem to work.

    Dunno if this would be helpful but here's a screen capture of the problem codec in the list.

    Does anyone know what I can do since this tool wouldn't fix my problem?

    Click the help icon up to the right , then in new window , uncheck read only ... box pop's open , hit "allow" button .

    That's what you missed ... now

    Under that picture you had , leave the top level item alone , click the nero avc item , and hit the big red button (you can also right click the offending item now and choose "delete") .

    Unfortunately , all these type's of repair's will do is remove the offending registry value's causing issue's ... reinstalling the program requiring this filter will put it back ... but remember you must reboot after the repair , and before reinstall .

    Have another problem now... After I turn off read-only mode then click on the avc item, the red button becomes gray again and I cannot click on the button. I've tried clicking the avc item before I turn off read-only mode, but then it's no longer highlighted.

    Strange ... I'd fire the program up first , reset the read only mode again , then see what happen's when you try to remove the problem using the right click > del .

    Just tested codec sniper ... and it dosent even work here on my current system .

    -------------------------

    Try it after this :

    Go into windows explorer , tools , folder options , view tab .

    Check "show hidden files and folders" , and the two under it , answer yes to idiot box , apply , ok , close that box now .
    Go to document's and settings .
    Normal login account name .
    Local settings .

    Clean out the temp folder (hold down shift key before delete = bypass trash can) .
    Repeat for temporary internet folder .

    This should be done for any active account's (family member's sharing pc with own account ... ect) .

    Reboot pc , and rescan with hijackthis ... sound's as though something is blocking the tool which I have seen on rare occasion's .
    Save log ... then try what I said with filmerit_21en.exe once more .

    First, remove HiJackThis from your system. Click START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL, then Add/Remove Programs. You'll see hijackthis listed, click on it and remove it. If you are asked to save any hijackthis backups, answer No.

    Hijackthis cannot be used to solve this kind of problem. Even if you had malware on your machine, it wouldn't cause the behavior you describe. Watch out for useful but arcane tools like HiJackThis -- it's a great program, but you have to know exactly what you're doing. And there are many malware infections, Trojans, desktop hijackers, and rootkit villains that HiJackThis can neither detect nor help remove.

    What you have is a corrupt registry, due likely to (a) a Nero update, or (b) an incomplete uninstall of Nero, or (c) the install of other burner software before Nero was entirely removed. Most likely, it's (a) or (b), but don't quote me. Multiple burner software packages should not be installed.

    If you have any software that runs automatic updates -- except the usual Windows Update and antivirus/antispy updates -- turn them off and learn to run all those other updates manually. It's not possible to list every program that uses auto update (Adobe Reader, RealPlayer, Nero, PowerDVD, Java VM...), you have to go to their Help windows or their Preferences or Options menu and turn off auto updates that aren't required for system security. Those other auto updates are nothing but a huge pain in the . . .; they run as background applications, or sneak up on you when you're doing something else critical. If you turn off your PC before the update completes, you are often, and royally, screwed.

    Next, you should get thee to Nero's website and search for and download every removal and registry cleanup program they offer, if appropriate to the Nero stuff you've installed.

    If you look at the diagnostic window you posted as an image earlier, you'll see that the diagnostic is telling you this:

    Your registry has an entry saying that among the DirectShow components on your PC, one of them is called the "Nero Digital AVC Video Enc", which is an encoder. The message on your diagnostic window just below that one is an error message saying that no codec by this name has a CLSID registry entry. Don't worry what "CLSID" is, just be aware that your registry says in one area that the encoder is installed, and in another area it's saying that the encoder's file doesn't exist.

    Before you run any of Ahead Nero's cleanup or removal programs, here are two web pages you can refer to. You will have only a vague idea what these geeks are talking about, but at least you'll have some indication of how an update or uninstall got screwed up.

    The first page (scroll down to see all of it) describes a problem similar to yours and offers some tips on a fix. That page is http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=126703 and is titled "Codec Missing After Update".

    On that same page, at the bottom or near the bottom, you'll see a link to a second page suggesting that your codec isn't missing, it's likely mismatched by old and new registry entries.

    This second page's link is to http://www.headbands.com/gspot/notes/dup_nero/ . You won't understand that page, either, but it'll give you an idea of the mess you have if you don't completely remove Nero, PowerDVD, and any other burners or third-party DVD players that you have now, and start over from scratch. These pages also have additonal hints about using the free gSpot utility.

    Otherwise, your best bet is to save everything you can, burn it to CD or transfer stuff to another drive, and reinstall Windows.
