Well, I ripped my DVD of Princess Mononoke to my HD with Mac the Ripper using the Tile Only extraction option and demuxing the video stream (this was necessary because some things like the caption in the beginning of the movie and the credits are set to switch based on your audio settings, the demuxed mpeg2 was the japanese version only).

All was great, and I encoded using ffmpegx's mencoder and x264 h.264 conversion options until I got the quality I wanted. In the end it was:

    x264, 848x480, 1143 kbps, 23.976 fps, cropped slightly (4x8x2x2),
with deinterlaced, constant, 14x4 analyzed, CABAC'd and trellised, b-framed picture
at a 5.1 exhaustive AVC level.

It is really pretty as a stand-alone video-track, but there is a major problem:

The duration of the encode was 2hrs 8min 9sec, while the audio tracks and the DVD are 2:13:30.

I thought it could be the framerate, so I went back to see if mencoder would furnish better results as it switches framerates to accommodate some cgi scenes, I noticed. This, I'm still testing for duration (VLC doesn't give a duration number . . . wait for it . . .)

My friend mentioned that there might have been some booby frames in the DVD to keep the chapters timed right or something, but honestly I'm at a loss!

I've checked the audio tracks (untouched from the original demuxing), and they don't seem to be the problem. They also don't seem editable, really (practically).

Please help me! How can I make my video the right length?

    Thanks in advance!

P.S. The only reason this isn't in another forum is that I just registered.

And since this seems Mac related, probably better in our Mac Forum. Moving you.

Answered my own question. The mpeg-2 stream rip was fine, just didn't encode in a raw form. I put it into VLC and Exported it. The video was the right length, and everything is working great!
