  1. Had a rather strange Saturday. Here's what happened:

    1. Began an install of the newly-released 1.2.1 DVD Flick.

    2. During the install, on three separate occasions I was asked if I wanted "retry" an attempt to change the attribute of a DLL system file to something other than "read-only". Each time -- like a dummy, I guess -- I clicked on "retry" and the installation proceeded, and finished.

    3. I then clicked on the new DVD Flick desktop icon. The DVD Flick logo came up. And that's it. The program did not open, but the logo stayed there. So I opened up task manager and closed the program. I tried opening it again and this time did not even get the logo. Also, all my other programs would now not open.

    4. I uninstalled DVD Flick -- which was not on my system before. And I tried a reinstall. Now could not open the set-up program.

    5. I rebooted. Only to find that the process, which used to take about 30 or 40 seconds, now took 15 minutes. During that reboot time, the system seemed to be looking for something in my DVD drive. The light would stay on.

    6. Once done rebooting, the system seemed normal.

    7. I tried Safe Mode. Same thing. I tried "return my configuration to the last one which worked". Same thing.

    8. I tried a System Restore, which did put me back a day or two ago. But the reboot still took 15 minutes.

What was happened here??? And why??

I've installed that app and never had a problem, but with any app, YMMV. Here is a list of the support files it installs.

I'm guessing your system took a long time to reboot after the volume restore because windows was running system file checker (sfc.exe) to ensure your dlls were back to normal. This can take a long time. I'm guessing the next time you reboot, it'll be fast again, since sfc.exe already completed.

I'll bet if you look at your application event log -- Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Event Viewer You'll get some additional info.

  3. Dear Soopafresh,

Thanks very much for your valuable help. Yes, the three files I mentioned are in your list. But I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

I went into Event Viewer and found about 5,000 lines like this, all beginning about the time I started having trouble:

    "REDX Error 1/20/2007 8:15:43PM cd-rom(source) 7(event)"

When I open the Properties box for each line, it says the same thing:

"The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block"

Does any of this pin point the problem, or solution??

    Thanks again,
    M22

From the error, it sounds like your cdrom is failing. To verify, you could disconnect the drive, disable in the BIOS, and then see if your boot times return to normal. If it does, I would just replace the drive.
