  1. i have a few mpegs that won'y open in QT or mpegstreamclip or ffmpeg, when i use VLC to play the info tells me it has the MP43 codec...

    MP43 is Microsoft-MPEG4 V3, a short lived DivX competitor that was abandoned a little later for WMV development, iirc.
    Maybe the QT DivX component can decode it?

  3. no luck, i wonder if there is a pc app that i can run in VPC that would allow me to switch these files to a different codec...

    Try the Perian codec for QuickTime.

    Odd, Perian lists MS-MPEG4 v3 decoder capability...

  7. i reinstalled Perian again and the files still won't open in quicktime...

  8. ok,i got it to work....all i did was rename the files with .avi instead of .mpg

    hmm, thanks so much for this as I had the exact same issue. How did you figure out to change the file extension?

  10. i ran into that problem before, i had a file with without the 3 letter extension that wouldn't play with quicktime but would play fine with VLC...once in VLC you can get info on the codec it uses and from there you can decide how to name it...

    MP43 cannot be embedded in an .mpg file. It's a Video For Windows codec thant can only be used in .avi or .asf container. Your file had an incorrect file extension. VLC doesn't rely on the file extension to guess the type of file. Quicktime throws an error because he detects .avi informations in what seemed to be an .mpg file, so Quicktime just thinks the file is corrupted.
