I'm trying to get some info. before I spend the money on a new computer. I'm pretty sure this has been asked before but the search function in this forum is down so I have no way to search the archive.
Of coz, the latest and greatest CPU with 20G of RAM is great for video conversion. But due to limited resources (money), there is only so much you can spend on it. First of all, is 256M RAM enough. Oh, I forgot what I want to do, I just need to convert DV files into VCD / SVCD so that I can play it in the DVD player. How are CPU speed?

Further to my question, what is the compression time difference between a 1.4G AMD XP and a Celeron 1G for instance?

My guess would be that the most cost effective solution would be an Athlon XP 1800+ or something around there, with 256-512mb DDR Ram depending on how much you can spend. Since the Athlon XP now has support for SSE it should be a good choice. Though I've heard that the XPs will be released with 0.13 micron instead of todays 0.18 in afew months, so might want to wait a while before buying a new one. Also the old XP cpu's will probably drop in price.
