    Hello,
    I use windows 98 first edition (CPU 266 MHz) and WMP V 6.4.07.1117 .
WMP should be able to play avi. It does with old avis I find on my harddrive.
But it does not with avi files I downloaded on my harddrive.
WMP wants to access the internet (microsoft). But the only WMP which fits to windows 98 is version 6.4. not higher.
Is there a player which fits to windows 98 and which play also avis currently downloadable from the internet? Or am I excluded from avis?
    Thanks

Install ffdshow and then play with WMP or use Media Player Classic for Win98.

Or use VLC Media Player, plays everything.

Actually, the highest version of WMP you can get for Win98/ME is version 9; I think Windows Update only takes you to WMP7, maybe 8, even though 9 is available. I don't think there's any significant advantage to upgrading past possibly 7, though - or 6 if you're generally happy with it - except maybe the Windows Media (WMV/WMA) support.

Baldrick's right; it's a codec issue. Your system doesn't have all the necessary codecs installed to play all of the AVIs. You might also want to get the latest version (2.60, as I'm typing this) of GSpot, and run AVIs that don't play through it. It should tell you what codecs you'll need to install.

Next issue is whether you have enough power for realtime decoding.
