I haven't had any success with the program yet. This is as far as I have gotten. In order to even get my computer to let me copy big VOB files onto my hard drive, I had to change the program the files open with (under File > Get Info) to ffmpegx. I dragged an VOB file into ffmpegx, and chose to convert to mp4. The original VOB I tried is about 1 GB. I waited quite awhile, and the best I got was a 4 KB mp4, that would not open. The progress bar showed 0% the whole time. Still, this was closest I have gotten to encoding an VOB file. What am I doing wrong?

Also, how can I tell what part of my DVD this VOB file is?

In order to copy DVD files you need to specify the top (VIDEO_TS) folder which contains all the .VOB, .BUP, .IFO etc files. Have you tried simply specifying the top directory rather than an individual .VOB file?

As to what part that .VOB file is, you can use MyDVDedit but it assumes you have read the excellent and extremely deep and dirty secrets of DVD formatting etc. Not for the faint hearted.
