just thought i'd toss this out. i've got a stack of coasters that's about 2 - 2.5 inches high.
turns out my acer 8x4x32x burner will NOT burn any readable discs at 8x and sometimes even 6x speed. took me awhile (and 2.5 inches of coasters) to learn and accept this fact, after having read of similar problems by other acer owners. i've learned to live with 2x and 4x burns, especially since i use cd-rw for most of my XVCDs anyway.

So sorry to hear about your problems. But what would be interesting to find out would be, has anyone got some good ideas what to do with all these wrongly burnt, unwanted CD-R's? I mean apart from the obvious coasters, Christmas tree decorations, wobbly chair and table supports...?

I also have an Acer 8x4x32 w/8meg buffer. have had it 19 months and have burnt over 400 discs with this one. I have burnt about 15-20 bad discs with it. Although i haven't had problems burning at 8 speed except that it doesn't detect most discs as being 8 speed. i have 80 min imation 12x and pny colored 12x that only burn at 4x. imation 650meg 8x's burn at 8x though. weird.
as for what to do with them, go here for ideas http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-9

I've managed to make about 10 coasters all due VIA motherboard problems (Abit KT7A) and CDR/RW drives.
At first i thought i had lost it, but then i figured what it was all about and the update came along. Never had any problems using Intel a while ago
Usage? I've a friend who decorated his garage with literally 100's of CDR's, looks.. weird! Like in disco!

I set one of my coasters on fire (very noxious fumes). I then took the partially destroyed disk with me on the Metro and put it in an empty seat. I sat back and enjoyed the reactions of people who went to sit near or on the burnt disk. Best commute ever!
-
I'm thinking it'd be fun to just go up on a roof or bridge somewhere and chuck 'em at cars. I think I've burned something like 30 coasters in the past few months.

don't be an ******* chopper face.
you never know what kind of accident that could cause,
and if you're over 14 years of age, you shouldn't consider that shit funny anyway -
Well, I had an Acer 6x4x32 and all I can say is that Acer makes total pieces of crap. I had one and after 2 months it did the same thing, I then returned it to Acer and they sent me and even older refurbished one! That one just stopped burning CD's less than a year later and my warranty wasn't extended for my refurbished burner, it was the same 1 year warranty from the original purchase!! So, my experience with Acer was terrible, especially after I learned that my burner was discontinued due to problems, what a surprise!!

It seems making coasters is definately part of the learning process
I'm interested in any good ideas. Art projects? Mirrors? I don't know but would sure be interested in some good ideas.

that's weird! my acer has got no problems detecting discs for 8x burns and will burn at 8x with absolutely no errors. my dvd player just can't read the darn thing when the burnings done. -
We used to sit on the roof of the Rideau Center and we'd try to hit cars with slurpee juice. The problem was they would come from under where we were standing so we couldn't see them coming and at such an infrequent rate that we sort of had to predict when they'd come. We never hit any cars. My friend hit a pedestrian though. We ran like hell that day... not that he'd have been able to catch up with us because of the way the mall was set up.
Anyway I'm not saying I'd actually throw CDs at cars. Worst I've done is chuck pennies off an overpass and I guess that's pretty bad. Still you've gotta admit that would be hella fun to pull off. This from a 23 year old.

......Twine, 16, of St. Louis, was certified Friday to stand trial as an adult

of involuntary manslaughter for dropping the basketball-sized block off an
Interstate 64 overpass in St. Louis in February. The block slammed through
the windshield of a car driven by Russian immigrant....

A coaster is hardly concrete. However, dont drop anything off overpasses! Its clearly not the wisest thing to do. Try leaving them on the seats of your local high speed rail train.

pioneergirl!
you got it straight. i remember reading that article 6 years ago, but i couldn't reference it. this happened to my parents also under highway 44, but thank god it hit the seat between them.

I think we should give him a break. It may be a serious thing. But I'm sure no harm was ment.
But if any body comes up with a project for these coasters, I could defenty donate quite a few. -
I get mad and microwave the things.
Throwing shit off a bridge is a good way to get your ass kicked if you ask me. That might be funny to watch too. -
Why doesn't someone collect all our coasters and build an orphanage with them?

Btw, F ucking Acer sucks, i also have a 6x4x32 on the old comp, and it will never burn a compatible disc at 6x.
I think i'll try the microwave,.. and burning things for me got boring already.. *shrugs*

Sometimes you're just so sure it's right, the confidence in the process supercedes rationality ... resulting in a coaster.

LadiesLadies and Gentlemen,
Let us not complain about burning coaster, but think how you can make money on those useless disks. Brainstorming is the most productive way to go. One ideal of mine, living on a sub-tropical island, is to make fishing lures. As you well know, the disk reflects sunlight and underwater, it actually looks like a fish thrashing around mimicking a wounded fish or a fish in some type of feeding frenzy. You can cut the disk in pieces, drill small holes, tie them with fishing line, attached to a fishing hook and Wa-lá!, Dinner

Well, so far a few ideas have been popping up here and there, but who want's more than 1 "cd-r" clock, 1 pair of earrings, a few frisbies, tons of confetti etc.? I mean if we are talking about unwanted coasters, I mean hundreds of them.
These days, without sounding too "alternative", most things are reclycled. My question: Can one recycle used, or unwanted CD-R's? There is as I understood aliminium in them - has the CD-R industry considered this alternative? Will we in future be seeing "environmentally friendly CD-R's"? -
This is bull sh*t you guys wasting this forum for your boring lives. I looking to burn 90 minute cd's and this page of the forum wasted my time.
-
Then why did you read it all and then post?

Jesus Christ bkoyle, its one topic out of hundreds, settle the Love down.
Put them in the microwave and it takes a few seconds to get the arcs and then hit stop right away. Otherwise your microwave will stink like hell. -
COASTERS????
I've burned at least 60 or more bad coasters in my CD Burning life...Playstation screw-ups, VCD crashes, Nero f***ups, DirectCD crap-outs!
Thank God they are so cheap!
BTW, bkoyle...nobody cares! This is just a topic meant to make people wonder exactly how many coasters they've made...
