First I would like to thank this site for its great guides... this is my first time I have actually have a question that I cant find in a guide.
I have a AVI file and when I load it into any one of the three different tmpgenc it says there is over 4+ hours of video while I know thanks to Gspot its actually 1hr and 38mins. I am currently waiting for another video to finish encoding and plan to try some other routes but I was wondering if there are any idea's or suggestions on what to try out.
This is the only video I have ever had an issue with, and for this resolution what would you recommend 704 or 720?
Thanks for your time![]()

In Gspot, see the little green 'VBR' lit up in the audio section? They should color that red instead.
That means your video has MP3 VBR audio that TMPGEnc and most MPEG encoders choke on. They will report that the video is much longer and if you encode it, you will likely have 3 hours of black screen along with your video, and your audio/video sync will be messed up.
The fix is to extract the audio as a WAV and convert that separately to MP3 CBR and add it back in, or if you are going to make a DVD, you can use ffmpeggui and convert it to AC3 audio. Then encode the video by itself to MPEG and add the AC3 in with the converted video when you author.
Here's one way to extract it with VirtualDub Mod: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=280779
You will see MP3 VBR audio fairly often with Xvids. Something you need to watch out for.
And welcome to our forums. -
redwudz: Thank you for your post. I started exploring the CCE guide as I was pondering what other apps I used in the past.
I will like to try and use AC3 as it seems to give me more video bit rate (6000's) as my current ones are right around the 4000's and low 5's.
Thanks tho ... maybe I will top myself over my old dvd's I have produced.
P.S. any recommendations for MP4 formats? -
MP4 is the name of the container and not really a format. You might want to check the GLOSSARY for a definition, or better, the link to the Doom9 forum for more info: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62723
In general, I like the Xvid codec. I use Divx also at times and I have tried a little with H.264. Many options with MP4.If you plan to deal with those formats, it's a good idea to learn about VirtualDub or VirtualDub Mod. They could be called the 'Swiss army knife' for AVI type files.
Also, CCE is a good encoder choice for MPEG-2. It's faster than TMPGEnc, but a little more complicated to set up. -
Like to thank you again for your help... pulled out the audio and used a calculator and everything came out correctly

Another handy trick with Virtual Dub: If you edit or filter with VirtualDub Mod or the regular VD, you can frameserve the edited video directly to a MPEG encoder. Frameserving eliminates creating an edited file that takes up space on your hard drive and most MPEG encoders will accept it. Saves time also.
If I am converting a Xvid, I save out the audio as a WAV, encode that to AC3 with ffmpeggui and with VDM still open, frameserve the video to my encoder. You can resize the video with VDM or filter or edit. Then frameserve.
Frameserving guide for VD or VDM: https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm
Or a little more advanced guide: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=87270
More advanced and quicker is using AVIsynth for frameserving and filtering. But it has a bit of a sharp learning curve.
